I like to think that America will eventually transcend its innate racism, in the big picture.
Look at where we are right now as a country. I believe that, if racial progress in our nation is two steps forward, one step back, right now our country has taken a really long step back. In the short term is sucks and we must battle the forces of evil. But I am optimistic for the future.
But that does not mean that there won’t still be racists or pockets of racism. Or ignorance. Or asininity.

  Read the letter King wrote while he was sitting in these people’s jail. There is no pattern to look for. It’s all people. No depersonalized “one step forward, one step back” theory. It’s people who choose to combat racism and people who don’t. Generations of people who choose to push back and generations of people who don’t push back hard enough.

The white people in Hoover are often even worse than, say, the white people in Mtn. Brook, because the Hoover ones still have the desperate insecurity and vestigial awareness of their own mediocrity that all vapid social climbers do.

I love the n-word when black people use it in ways to describe elements of your culture that might as well be happening in Darkest Africa compared to my white person experience in life. Not just that you’re reclaiming the word, but the way black people interact as peers.

I do not love it when white people say it.

  It’s a hateful word that we adopted in the way that a kidnapping victim relates to the kidnappers as family. The word is verbal shit. We can mold it like clay, put it in a kin, and make a plate out of it, it is still shit and not worth the effort. Because Black folk are creative and vibrant, we can literally make anything creative, vibrant and cool - even shit. But never forget, it’s still shit. It will always be the shit that someone else gave us to adopt. It has never stopped being shit. Shit never changes.

  Honestly, having heard but not seen the video, I wouldn’t make a guess at all to the economic level of the family. The only reason I have to believe that she is from a family on the lower end of the economic ladder is that most people are.

  I’ve actually seen a couple of white folks break down because they couldn’t wrap their mind around the concept of being in the minority, which is what they be in a foreign country.
