One of the many fucked up layers of all this is that with Flint's economic struggles the efforts to modernize the infrastructure could be a great source of jobs if the government actually gave enough of a fuck to fix this quickly.

Same could be said of Puerto Rico and any other town with POC in it. The scam is if this administration does the absolute least possible, no one can say they didn’t do anything. Then those who call them out on their bullshit are called “ungrateful”.

Flint Chief Financial Officer Hughey Newsome told the station that the new meters will help the city improve water bill collections and reduce water theft.

I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised this is their priority, but yeah, maybe collections and water theft should have been at the bottom of the list instead of the ONE thing they’ve got a handle on, huh?

All of this. Funny how the meters are the things they want to get good at. How about showing this same kind of urgency and interest in, oh, you know, revitalizaing the water system or something? Crazy, right?

But, yes, let’s hook up brand new meters to an ancient system.  You know, just because.

Knowingly harming a bunch of people and then forcing them to pay you afterwards? That’s American history in a nutshell.

Also most of Western Europe. See the amount of money Haiti had to pay France.

Not surprised, at all. This is what happens when you’ve had a city which a state hasn’t invested in in decades.

To be honest, though, this metering is a money grab. Yeah, meters need to be kept up, and Flint property owners need them. But this is something that should have happened years ago, and it shouldn’t be part of the central focus of the current crisis.

It’s also weird highlighting water theft, which isn’t the problem. Like in a lot of cities, a lot of water is being lost through deferred maintenance of ancient water mains and pipes. I imagine the percentage of the “missing” water that is from illegal hook-ups is miniscule to the water lost through ancient infrastructure.

So instead of looking for “stolen” water, how about you go do a comprehensive inspection of your old-ass water mains, Flint, and stop trying to blame poor people?

      This.

Many cities lose a significant portion of their treated water through leaks. A small town in our area figured that they were approaching 50% of treated water was being lost in leaks. They got grant money and loans to replace their combined sewers, and took advantage of the street disturbance to replace every inch of water main in the system while they were at it. The savings in lost water was enough to pay for the new mains installation.

It's like the town of Flint Michigan is located in a third world country.
