While I love the world of GTA and have been playing since the the old overhead versions, I hate GTA online for this very reason. When GTA V was released, I was in the middle of a bunch of other games and was subsequently late to GTA online. Starting out and getting ganked repeatedly made me quickly bail on the game. At this point, it feels like the only way to get a level of enjoyability and being to hold your own would require purchasing shark cards.

I don’t play GTA Online, but from what I’ve read about things in it like the orbital cannon, not even infinite Shark Cards can save you from the trolls and griefing.

I probably couldn’t play it at all (I have serious problems with 3D sickness in games), but I’m to the point where I have no desire to ever try it, even if I could play it.

“The massively multiplayer aspect of a massively multiplayer game is functionally ruining the game as a massively multiplayer experience.”

We are officially living in the worst timeline for gamers as a community.

Have you ever done CEO Crates? Imagine doing 10 hours of missions, getting a full Warehouse to sell, and it all falls down to a single weaponizd vehicle, and 10 seconds, to bring it all down. Now you can’t even know if something is coming with the Off the Radar and Ghost Organization abilities. Are you suggesting to get people to cover your sale? Fine. As of December 2017, you can only hope nobody has an Orbital Cannon ready to be fired, and there is no known counter. And the guy who shoots the cannon could even have glitched money.

This state of affairs is, unfortunately, the only logical outcome for GTA Online. Given an open world sandbox in a game where people run around committing crimes with all manner of weapons and vehicles, the result will always be chaos. Red Dead will be no different.

Not really. Let Online missions be completed in private lobbies, effectively turning Online into a big fancy co-op version of GTA.

If I were Rockstar, I would have done that from the beginning and sold it as exactly that: GTA Co-op.

Are these aggressive players just doing it to troll?

Yes.  It was true on day 1, and has always been true. There will always be strangely broken people that think joy is a zero sum game, where they can only enjoy a game by ruining others’ enjoyment.

To be fair, the most accurate comparison to the GTA situation would be a rando walking up to people playing Magic then flipping their table.

GTA V is the one I’ve had the least enjoyment from because of the online. They completely ignored the single-player the moment it turned a profit and haven’t given a fuck about the quality of the online experience since.

GTA V’s lack of single player support and the focus on the online game which is a nightmare of assholes has made me move Red Dead Redemption II from a day one purchase to a maybe pick it up later game for me.

for a time i really wanted to get through all of gta online’s co-op missions but the fact that you hit a hard fail if you run out of team lives made it impossible for me to see any of that content. I get that they had to add in some sort of hurdle to earning xp and making so people couldn’t sleep through the encounter but even that became a trolling mechanism where players would intentionally die repeatedly just to force a failure for the entire lobby. i wish they just had a queue that was setup like destiny’s strikes where it was basically impossible to fail the mission as long as at least one player was willing to keep trying.

It's not that players die intentionally, most players are just bad at the online missions and heists, so you really need committed serious players hopefully with mics to complete them easily.

maybe a little of both, i definitely encountered players who intentionally destroy mission vehicles or blow themselves up repeatedly.

All that trouble to try and find non-full lobbies? It’s really, really easy to spawn an empty public lobby in Windows 10. Jump into any public session, alt-tab out and open your Task Manager. Find the GTA V process, right click on it and click on Suspend. Wait 10 seconds. Right click on it again and click Resume. Go back into GTA V. You’ll see a bunch of messages saying people left the session, but all you’ve done is spawned your own public session. That’s it. People will eventually start to filter back into it, but if that bothers you, just repeat.

I don’t know how old you are but if you were alive in the 80s you wouldn’t be saying that. Everywhere you look now there are video games. Three different major video game consoles two different major VR systems all kinds of second-tier little handheld video game consoles tons of retro consoles games on your phone games on your tablet games on your iWatch. So many games that everybody has to give them away free every month. Movies about games movies based on games movies that have games based on the movie. free games that are so big that cell phone companies mention them in their commercial about how they work best on their cell phone. I think this is exactly the opposite. I don’t think there was a better time in life for a person who likes video games to be alive.

The fastest way on Xbox to get an empty public lobby is load into a session, go to network and test your NAT type. Only takes a few seconds and kicks you to an empty lobby 100% of the time. Then invite your friends. And since it generates that lobby from an error you very rarely get randoms joining.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a rando join when I’ve done that. It takes literally like 3-4 seconds and you’re gtg. So many people whining when there are such easy solutions. Granted, you may not get as much money from selling in an empty lobby as opposed to a full one, but at least you won't die either. 90% of something is better than 100% of nothing.

Get enough friends to start two CEO companies. That way you both can do the sales and you still get some (not full) bonus from there being rivals in the session.

Messing with other player is the best and worst part of GTA online. I played it for a short period maybe a year after launch, it was before and then after they gave every player like what a million dollars in game. I just wish there was an option to turn off PVP entirely so you can still run around with friends and do missions, but not have to worry about getting killed mid mission. I enjoyed GTA online but there was just way to much of a grind to get anything good equipment or car wise.  So I gave up, in the beginning all you get are shit missions to do the good ones don’t unlock until you get some decent levels.
