Unfortunately, Cuomo’s refusal to even consider using tax revenue for drug war reparations has support among black leadership. Black leaders were incensed when Nixon spoke of her plans to reverse some of the damage the war on drugs did to black and brown communities. Rev. Johnnie Green of Mount Neboh Baptist Church, Rev. Carl Washington Jr. of New Mount Zion Baptist Church, both in Harlem, and Rev. Troy DeCohen of Mt. Vernon Heights Congregational Church of Westchester said offering drug war reparations to black people “did a disservice to black people.”

I’m sorry but they don’t speak for me. I luh Jesus too, but Idon’t understand why we keep giving credence to religious leaders in our communities.

Indeed. Considering how predatory so many so-called men of the cloth are, we don’t need any of them speaking for us politically.

The last people i would search out for moral leadership are these religious pimps- masquerading as men/women ordained by God. Just as you will find more pedophiles and sex freaks in religious institutions there too would i expect to find more drug fiends.

At the end of the article you’re creating context for the reparations comment that didn’t exist.

If she had in fact said ‘drug war reparation,’ it would’ve upset a lot fewer people, possibly even won some over.

Everyone knows (even those who claim they don’t) that the drug war unfairly targets minorities, so ‘drug war reparations’ make sense. However, everyone also associates ‘reparations’ (no qualifier) with slavery. Nixon used the no qualifier ‘reparations,’ not the drug war version you claim she meant in the article.

How you figure? Seems like the people who have a problem with this plan either have a problem with marijuana or have problem with black people getting something.

I don’t have a problem with the plan as presented by Tamika. I had a problem with the quote as said by Nixon because:

      • Instead of paying slavery reparations straight up like they should of done a long time ago, they’re going to ‘allow’ a few people to ‘earn’ their reparations with a new thing they created that’s available to everyone regardless of color
      • Black people whose families suffered through slavery, generational poverty, and institutional racism who don’t want to sell marijuana don’t deserve reparations?

Which is why I said she was adding context that didn’t originally exist.
