“My decision disallowing Nike from profiting from our taxpayers while they are using their powerful voice as a political tool is my message. This government will not let taxpayer dollars be used to promote a company’s or individual’s political position, platform or principle. That’s my position as a matter of fairness to all.”

Also, how can he quantify this as political? Is it not a social issue?

Are civil, human rights only important to one of the two main parties?

Did I just answer my own question?

Given that SCOTUS ruled in Citizens United that political contributions are a form of political speech entitled to 1A protections, I hope Mayor Zahn wasn’t planning on the city buying anything from any company that’s ever donated to any elected official or PAC, anywhere.

...this guy seems not super-duper bright.

The irony is the ad itself has no political tones, aside from the ones folks have been assigning to it.

Talk about the power of projection.

Right? He hasn’t been kneeling during the anthem for a couple years now. So basically his only stance is “don’t murder people.” It’s the same thing when someone makes a grand statement about “integrity” and “honesty” and Trump supporters take it as a personal attack.

      Hey Rev Crowley,

Go any or all of the diplomatic offices of the countries that your ancestors came from and apply for asylum. I’m sure that Norway, Germany, Holland and/or the UK would jump at the chance to free you from the oppression that you suffer here in ‘Murica’.

Don’t forget to send me a postcard!!

The suburbs of New Orleans are having a week. I’m in a FB group full of liberals from Louisiana (mostly concentrated in the suburbs of Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Lafayette). They are mostly white, mostly in their 40s or older, and frankly, mostly could use a great deal of education on the subject of race and privilege. However, these people who are in this group simply to have social interaction with people who aren’t Republicans are responsible for this issue hitting the media and organizing the subsequent protest (where they registered voters!). At the same time, they were basically ground zero for outing the teacher in Slidell who called black children animals on Facebook, raising hell with the school board, and again, getting the media involved.

I don’t exactly know where I’m going with this, except that if these non-”woke,” fairly centrist gen-xers (and older) are taking this kind of action, I feel excited about what everyone else is doing. I think their is some degree of always just being anti-whatever-the-Republicans-want, which is not specifically productive, but hey.

The New Orleans Mayor made...a statement...basically saying “Our airport is in Kenner but we don’t know her!” So...that’s...words. Good? Thank you, LaToya?

Organizing post 2016 has been super-easy from what I’m heard from liberal and Demcoratic groups. This is the first time ever, for instance, that I’ve regularly donated to political campaigns. But like random people - especially women of a certain age - are super plugged in since 2016.

I really think the media is going to be - well they should be - embarrassed about this underlying story when elections results roll in in November.  All the while they are out in Trump country doing endless stories about “how his base still supports him!” Dems have been winning dozens and dozens of special elections in from city council seats up to Senate seats and organizing like no one’s business.  But short of a story that lasts a day, you never hear anything about it.

Yeah, for the fractions of seconds that I allow myself optimism, I hope that all this new activism and engagement that we are seeing is going to push our country in a political direction that people can’t even envision right now. I hope history looks at this moment as the era of a progressive push and not the “Trump Era.” He is a magnet for attention but I’ll be fucking damned if he is our legacy.

If corporations are people, wouldn’t it be a violation of Nike’s first amendment rights for a government entity to boycott or ban their products based on their speech?

I emailed this to the mayor a few minutes ago. I included the phrase, “Boycott support,” in the subject line because I figured I’d get a better response if he thinks it’s a positive message:

Your decision to boycott Nike is foolish, petty, and, quite frankly, it’s a gross overstepping of what any government official should be doing.

If you had any sense of integrity, you’d say something like this: “I disagree with Kapernick’s protest and I cannot support the Nike campaign. However, as an elected official, I support Kapernick’s right to express himself freely, and Nike has a similar right to create whatever ad campaign it so chooses.”

    Signed,

Jon Lareau (A guy who thanks Almighty God that he doesn’t live in Kenner, Louisiana.)

Apologies for not using the actual screenshot. New phone, old brain, learning curve and such.
