Is “Ma’am” on the list of things I can’t say anymore? When did that happen? Because it sounds like you’re telling me that every time I thought I was being polite by calling a woman “Ma’am,” I was actually being an [insert appropriate pejorative term here].

This is an oldie. How old is this teacher, because this was one of those things that was hot with the Second Wave Feminists back in the 1970s; where they insisted on being addressed with male honorifics to prove they were as good as men (the old, “if you call him sir, then you call me sir” shit). I haven’t seen this one cropping up in a while. Frankly I was glad when 2nd wave feminism died off in the 80s, I am not a happy girl if it is making a comeback.

This is more than likely white women not wanting to be seen as “old” and taking it out on a kid.

I’m so angry Raineyb, I burst into tears. That poor child was hospitalized for hallucinations and as a result of surgery has memory issues. That racist witch should lose her job and retirement.

If my son comes home and says he got in trouble for calling a teacher “ma’am” she won’t have to worry. Because when I get to the school that will be the last thing I call her.

I have to admit that it was a turning point in my life when people started calling me ma’am instead of miss. But, hey, I got over it and so should she.

This is...weird. Especially for the fact that it happened in the south. They usually are big on ma’am. When I was in elementary school in Texas as a kid, we had to say it when addressing a teacher and if we didnt we’d get in trouble.

On another not though, I’ve encountered women who dont like it used towards them because they think it makes them sound old or something. Like there’s a ageism thing attached with it for some women.

I’ve encountered the same. I think it’s the same sort of thing where some men don’t like to be called “Mr. —-” because “Mr. --- is my dad”. Seems like an arrested development thing to me.

Apparently, the teacher had previously told her students that she did not like the use of the word ma’am.

Definitely sounds more like a ‘bitch’ to me.

What is it, the second week of school? Cut the kids some slack. My sister is an elementary teacher and if getting called “ma’am” was something she even had time to worry about rather than severe behavior issues and neglected children, she would be thrilled.

“This is a personnel matter which has been handled appropriately by the K-7 principal.”

This isn’t a personal matter, none of this was a personal matter and it was an unprofessional manner and going a step further, a prejudiced matter.

Fuck that principal and teacher. I hope that shit is on her record.

    What?

    The?

    Fuck?

Sir. Ma’am. Those are terms of respect. Even if you don’t like that word, you still acknowledge to a child that showing respect for your elders is the proper thing to do. Period. I can’t count how many disrespectful little fucks I’ve heard showing absolutely no form of common decency lately.

To Mr. Bryant and Mrs. Wilson. You did right. Don’t let some uppity tightwad Becky tell you any different.  Thank you sir and ma’am for raising a respectful young woman.  We as a culture owe you.

Showing respect for anyone involves listening to their personal preferences. If she wanted to be addressed by her name instead of by an archaic address then that is what the boy should be taught to respect.

This is a very superficial click bait story.

The teachers said she clearly told the class to not call her ma’am. It is one thing is the student slipped up, but how do we know the kid wasn’t doing this to be deliberately disrespectful and rebellious? Taunting her, in fact?

    We don’t, do we.

If you think all little kids are angels, you know nothing about kids.

How did this post of all things get approved? Even if the teacher didn’t like to be called ma’am, this wasn’t an appropriate response. So what if it makes you fell old- every adult woman looks old to a middle schooler, even if you’re some sexy 23 year old. Honestly, I’d rather be recognized as an adult when working in the schools than confused with the high school students.

How? Because of this: “...but how do we know the kid wasn’t doing this to be deliberately disrespectful and rebellious? Taunting her, in fact?”

If she was just being a asshole, then fine, she’s an asshole and deserves the derision. If the kid was being disruptive, that’s on the kid.

The knee jerk reactions here are pathetic. We’re not talking about Nazis in this article, just the usual classroom drama that’s as old as recorded history.
