I think you guys should stop posting misery porn like this. Had the same thought about the little girl who died crossing the expressway after her drunk driving dad crashed the car. It’s excessive and gratuitous and honestly will probably make me stop coming to this site eventually.

When you stop visiting, will you go out and become a public activist, working to make the world a better place for the underprivileged? Or will you just go to TMZ and post your outrage in the comment section? I think we all have a pretty fair idea what the answer is. Who needs you?

As a white guy I hesitate to post anything on this story because there are certain issues the black community is ultimately going to have to work out internally. But that’s why I think this one has some value, while I agree 100% on the horrible story about the little girl.

Just one hour earlier, Latimore posted on his Facebook page, “Thru all the bullshit I den been thru I’m just glad I can say I made it to see 17.”

I was just thinking to myself “I don’t feel like I hate the world enough and need to cry this morning” and sure enough, the Root came all the way thru.

Amen. I come here every day because I need a big dose of non-white perspective in my life but, man, my ‘I got no use for hate’ optimism takes a serious hit when I do.

If I didn’t have so much damn work to do, I’d start drinking now.

The war within.. the slow motion genocide.. This is horrible on all levels. Guys we can’t allow this shit to go on. The very system is a threat to Black survival and this is playing into its design. Our children need protection both within & without.

I basically have two options, given my geographic location and work situation: throw money at some aspect of the problem (donation), or voting. Neither will bring that kid back or prevent the next incident. So I’m left with increasing hopelessness towards this country.

Later information is the car was torched.  https://www.stltoday.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/car-used-in-fatal-shooting-of-teen-on-his-th/article_8822b98b-9ac3-5250-8d55-a9f393ab5548.html

The Saint Louis city murder rate is exaggerated over other cities because, unlike most cities, it is separate from any county, which would dilute the murder rate.

Even more spectacular is the rate in East Saint Louis (across the Mississippi River in Illinois), which has a few dozens of murders each year, but has so few full time residents the ratio ends up very high, about 100 per 100,000 residents. At one time East Saint Louis was as notable for meat packing as Chicago was, but the Saint Louis area failed to retain sufficient rail road lines and that set the stage for eventual failures, particularly in East Saint Louis, leaving it a near ghost town. Among other insults it was a shooting location for “Escape from New York.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_St._Louis,_Illinois

I’m glad someone else understands the distortion. Guessing you’re from the area. I recently moved to the DC area and when I tell people I’m from St. Louis they usually comment on how dangerous it is. I ask which high school they went to. They get confused and we move on with the conversation.

I moved from the DC area to Saint Louis. Have to keep the center of gravity of the country from moving too much. Never had anyone ask which high school I went to; maybe my aura telegraphs that I’m not from around here.

I used to really enjoy the museums there. And the cherry blossoms in the spring. There’s plenty to do and so forth, but it is seriously crowded so I miss it less than I might otherwise.

    Poor kid.

Growing up, I always thought I was never going to make it to 25.
I understand his fear, and feel sorrow for his mom that he was taken from her on his birthday.
