O’Rourke’s answer was not only intelligent and well thought out, it was inspirational and sounded almost presidential.

Which is why he’ll probably lose an election in Texas.

I’m not willing to bet against you or anything, but he’s pulled dead-even w/ Cruz in the polls and there’s a ton of enthusiasm about O’Rourke in Texas.

Can’t stand when someone says “I’m a serviceman or veteran” or “My parent/child/sibling or whoever is/was a serviceman” and they are against the players kneeling and “disrespecting the flag and troops”.

Hell my family members have fought for this country too and they support the players kneeling. So what do we do here.....

My son (4 combat deployments) fully supports kneeling, so, yeah, there isn’t really a consensus on this one no matter how much the outrage machine tries to play it that way.

He also swiped an American flag magnet off a car that had a confederate flag on it and told the guy he didn’t deserve to display the nation’s flag if he also flaunted a symbol of treason and atrocities.

      My baby makes me proud.

Those who fought for the country, at least theoretically fought for free speech (I know it’s mostly for imperialism, but we can at least pretend to lofty ideals). So to use the specter of the military to try to silence those utilizing their free speech is hypocrisy of the highest order.

Yesterday, I saw a clip of O’Rourke skateboarding outside a Whataburger...

Today, he answers a “tough” question from a obviously mad constituent and answers the question, eloquently, thoughtfully, powerfully without coming nowhere close to talking down to the person that asked the question.

    Amazing.

Folks, if the people who are either representing you or wanting to represent you, can’t deliver the goods the way Beto did here, don’t fucking waste your vote on them.

A year ago, no one had heard of him. 8 months ago, he was polling nearly 20 points behind. Today, he’s within the margin of error. In 2 months, who knows?

But for a statewide election in Texas to be this close when the republican incumbent isn’t retiring or being indicted indicates there’s something special about the guy.

Like, I’m trying not to believe...but I’m starting to believe this can happen. I’m an optimistic guy, but have been trying to tamp down on it, lately. But there are things that are happening in this country in the group that the media simply isn’t picking up, like, in every corner of the country. I mean, in my homestate, we are now seriously talking about flipping a house in the legislature that hasn’t been held by Democrats since 1983.

At some point, you have to let go of your pessimism and be the change you want to see in the world. Like, I get it, people are still shell-shocked from 2016, but even Trump’s narrow “win” came with huge caveats that people ignore because it’s easier to be dour and hopeless than hopeful.

Beto can most certainly win. Are the polls closer than the reality? Probably, but there is an undeniable trend toward the guy. AND, if we’re actually seeing the makings of a legitimate wave, you don’t usually see the crest of it until about the month before the election. So, we’re likely to see a lot of close races that shouldn’t be close up until about October, and by then you’ll start to see which way the wave breaks.

That Cruz is in trouble in Texas with no scandal being the result of it is really nothing short of amazing.

This is beside the point of the article, but I am so sick of the campaign uniform. Am I supposed to relate and take heed to what a candidate says if he’s wearing a button down and jeans?

      Well yes, you are.

I’d rather see a button down and jeans than a suit in Texas in the summer. Hell, break out the golf shorts and t-shirt for that matter.

      What uniform would you prefer?

Also Beto has been driving around the state basically non-stop in a minivan (from which they record great little on-the-road videos). I’m sure he doesn’t have room for a huge wardrobe. Jeans and a dress shirt can be worn multiple times, especially if you are wearing an undershirt you can change every day. It’s a practical choice for someone in his position, and frankly looks like what most people in Texas wear anyway.

Beto is fun to watch - it’s like he’s doing a local campaign on a national level- convincing one voter at a time.

In a state that comprises 270,000 square miles and 254 counties, he somehow manged to visit all of them (driving) and actually talk to people - in an era when politicians country-wide are refusing to even do town halls.

Perhaps you are underestimating just how fucking big the area they’re talking about is. It’s akin to trying to wrap one’s mind around Derek Jeter’s many super-beautiful girlfriends. You’d need a graphic to underscore just what a Herculean effort this represents.

Sort of a “Naaah. There’s no way. There’s just no way.”

I disagree with him on only one thing - though I get why he said it given the state of the state. I don’t believe you can be equally American, equally a patriot holding either of these views. If you are offended by peaceful protest - and especially one that doesn’t incovenience you in any real way - or more offended by it than what is being protest (the epidemic of unlawful execution of minorities on the street by the state) you are not as American as I am.

Look, if you’re not for peaceful protest, you’re not for America.  I mean, I’m willing to give a lot, but I draw a line right here on this.  I have zero patience for this disingenuous bullshit about these protests.

If this guy Beto unseats Ted Cruz, he’s going to be President, isn’t he?

I mean, look at him. Listen to him. Switch out the races, and this guy is Obama in 2006.

I think if he dumps Cruz, you’re spot on.  Regardless he’s still a Congressman.  2024 is not beyond the realm of possibility if he doesn’t move to the upper chamber.

The Guardian has the question and O’Rourke’s answer without the irritating and unnecessary background music:

It’s interesting to skim through the responses. A few are predictable Trumpite troll-speak, but most are positive, including some from Texas voters.

Deadspin still hasn’t posted on this clear and heartfelt take on an important and divisive issue. I hope they do, since they reach a lot of people.

Honestly, he’s really needed something like this to come along. There have been a lot of “Can Beto actually win in Texas?” articles and they all usually cite that one of his biggest problems is that people just don’t know who he is. So something like this that starts pulling national attention seems like a positive sign.

Cruz eating shit in this election would definitely ease the pain I’ve been feeling since 2016.

Oh yes. He’s been working hard to be heard and to connect to Texas voters though, and it’s been getting through. I recommend this video from his Bill Maher interview in March:

He lays out clearly the issues with voter suppression and turnout in Texas and describes how he has been reaching people in the small Texas towns that Cruz has ignored while seeking national office.

He could not be any more different from Ted Cruz or any more obviously a better person and candidate.
