    Yeah, as a general rule, when people become virulently outspoken racists, I stop calling them my friends, the same way I ditched a lot of homophobic friends a decade back.

    I broke off a 15-year friendship earlier this year for that reason, BTW. The painful thing is that I’m still friends with the guy’s wife, and she’s super not racist, but even though he’s kinda useless (he’s on his fourth or fifth different career before age 40, which sometimes is a sign of bad luck, but in people who are scions of major landowning families generally indicates a general fecklessness) she hasn’t kicked him to the curb.

    “Hey, I’m a busy man. I’m working for the white house while still trying to cover up all my financial misdealings and underhanded deals from the past, working on some new ones now. Who’s got time to figure the political leanings of my friends when I’m more interested in how I can con them out of a couple million dollars!”

    And, like, aren’t you past the whole ‘birthday party’ thing, let alone a birthday party where you’re inviting all sorts of people to.

    Yall are misreading this. Most republicans of a certain age are civil rights republicans...in that they joined the republican party when democrats passed the Civil Rights Act.
