As has been noted elsewhere, here’s a nice portion from the dedication speech for Silent Sam:

The present generation, I am persuaded, scarcely takes note of what the Confederate soldier meant to the welfare of the Anglo Saxon race during the four years immediately succeeding the war, when the facts are, that their courage and steadfastness saved the very life of the Anglo Saxon race in the South – When “the bottom rail was on top” all over the Southern states, and to-day, as a consequence the purest strain of the Anglo Saxon is to be found in the 13 Southern States – Praise God.

I trust I may be pardoned for one allusion, howbeit it is rather personal. One hundred yards from where we stand, less than ninety days perhaps after my return from Appomattox, I horse-whipped a negro wench until her skirts hung in shreds, because upon the streets of this quiet village she had publicly insulted and maligned a Southern lady, and then rushed for protection to these University buildings where was stationed a garrison of 100 Federal soldiers. I performed the pleasing duty in the immediate presence of the entire garrison, and for thirty nights afterwards slept with a double-barrel shot gun under my head.

B-b-but the War wasn’t about slavery and white supremacy...

I feel like someone should record this speech and just blast it at 11 outside the chancellors house and office anytime she’s there.

So did the protesters take it way under a tarp? I hope they’re cutting that fucker into parts, before some white supremacist just puts it up someplace else.

My understanding is that the “authorities” removed it to an undisclosed location. Here’s hoping they’re smart enough not to put it back up in public.

Lemme spin this view of the historical context:

That statue was erected 48 years after the war. As someone noted this would be something like raising a statue to the SS in Germany in 1993.

Gotdayum, e white tears had power back in the day.

A lot of Confederate monuments were erected between 1910 and 1920 (as a matter of fact, there aren’t any monuments before 1908) in response to the NAACP success in litigation equal voting rights for blacks, black women getting the right to vote in 1920, the Supreme Court decision in Guinn vs United States, passage of the 19th Amendment, congress recognizing black suffrage, Niagara Movement of 1905, Civil Rights movement which started in 1896, etc. The South basically said by erecting the monuments that you Negroes with your Northern allies may win in the Federal courts but this is the South—don’t get uppity and know your rightful place.

Me too. Did you see what that fucker McCrory said?

“Are they any different than Nazis of the 1930s, 1920s in Germany tearing down statues, burning books?” McCrory asked.

I saw someone on twitter say that the statue is only what you make of it (basically, the problem isn’t that it’s a bad statue, just that you’re offended by it). To that person I say: Good! Let’s make it into toilet valves and manure shovels.

Waiting for the tears to flow from people demanding civility.

White Supremacy will not be defeated by a civil people. Just as slavery was not defeated by non-violence, and Jim Crow wasn’t dismantled by people being patient and quiet and waiting their turn. It was crushed when people of color refused to remain silent, and put themselves in harms way.

Don’t wait for white people to suddenly wake up and be decent and good towards our lives and our equality, we can see by the people in the White House, to whom their is no truth, and everything is a lie. That is a long wait for a train that isn’t coming. These monuments are a disgrace to our country, and should not be allowed to stand on public land, land that was paid for by the blood of slaves, and bought by the tears and sweat of their descendants.

Good riddance to Silent Sam, only about 700 to go. https://www.bustle.com/p/how-many-confederate-statues-are-there-in-america-the-number-is-appalling-77014

On Monday night, his watch ended, as student protesters tore the statue off its pedestal.
