no child should ever be denied a meal in school, particularly, because of inability to pay. smh.

I don’t know why mandatory 6-hour-per-day public education doesn’t come with free food. School lunches should be free.

I think this is also a symptom of school lunches being contracted out. Most of the lunch workers in my school were from within the city and lots were retired from other jobs. It was like having 20 grandmothers/grandfathers making sure you ate.

On the first day of school too??!! The person who tossed the food away in her face needs to be tossed out of their job. Even when kids are short, they usually give the child *something*, not let them starve.

This story makes me unreasonably angry.

    Or perhaps it’s reasonable anger.

Either way, fucking feed the children in your care.

This is justifiable Jesus-over-turning-tables-in-the-temples-and-whipping-the-money-changers type of anger.

You’re right to be angry at this level of mendacity, unmercifulness, cheapness that punishes children.

In the past my sons account was always overdrawn. He was simply told to bring the money the next day. That was in Florida as well.

I like in Massachusetts, and that’s always how my daughter’s school has handled things.

That worker couldn’t let 15 cents slide so a child could eat? That’s truly fucking evil.

I know? What does the worker even have at stake? Why do they even care? She’s not trying to run off with a designer handbag.

Not only did the worker allegedly take away the food from the hungry teen, the employee completely tossed it out, wasting a perfectly good meal.

Right. I’m blind with rage now. Got raised by a post-war baby, and had it drilled into me from the day I could understand human speech that YOU DO NOT WASTE FOOD (if it’s still edible - compost it if it’s past its use-by - because your health is more important).

And for a second, I was annoyed that no one would spot her a dime and a nickel. I’m going to assume that no one could afford to do so, because that makes it seem less horrible at a human level.

And yet my high school still hasn’t reimbursed me after I graduated high school. I know I have between $2 and $5 left on my account.

I’ve never seen a cafeteria deny a student a meal if they owed money. They would just make a note of it for next time or just tell that student no to worry about it.

Fire the cashier. Now. The staff issue is clear. Them responding by dumping food is egregious and would be laughably incompetent if this didn’t leave a child without lunch. After the mother mentioned the program, we should all know what this is about. That worker didn’t think she deserved that food. The disrespect makes me seethe.

There are top level issues as well but a statement needs to be made about not tolerating such insidious behavior and fire that worker.
