They fired him for the same reason they’ll occasionally put women into visible positions of power. Plausible deniability.
The only surprising part of this story to me is that HL Mencken was a white supremacist and this is the first I’m hearing about it. I’ll have to start raising my baseline expectation of racism for white men.

with British white nationalist Peter Brimelow at the 2016 Mencken Club conference, he got the boot according to CNN. For those unaware of Brimelow’s leanings, he “warns against the polluting of America by non-whites, Catholics, and Spanish-speaking immigrants”
Jesus Christ these people are going back to the whole Black Legend/anti-catholic/protestant reformation/universal monarchy shit. I thought that was pretty much over in the year of our lord 2018. These people are scary.

  I grew up mostly Catholic in the south where there were not many Catholics around, and the protestants I grew up with fucking HATED Catholics. They didn’t consider us Christian, they had all kinds of fucking conspiracy theories about us, they thought we worshiped Mary and had a bunch of false idols - it kind of surprised my whole family after we’d moved there. I don’t recall it affecting any political races but that hate is alive and well (or at least it was where I spent the 1990s....)

  I kind of understand it in the South. Part of the whole Klan thing (at least in its second resurgence) was centered on a throughgoing anti-Catholicism and hatred of foreigners including the Irish. BUt I am honestly a bit surprised that that lasted until the 90s (and perhaps, now that I am thinking about it, UNTIL NOW). But I thought the British had kind of gotten over that by now. That is really just goes to show you MY ignorance. LE SIGH!

It is a bit confusing since Stephen Miller also use to hang out with the same white nationalist crowd and was part of the group who invited Peter Brimelow to Duke University. There’s also that email from 2007 showing Miller had ties to Richard Spencer and that he worked directly with him at Duke University. So why is Darren Beattie gone and Stephen Miller still in the White House?
And how interesting that Darren Beattie wrote his thesis on Martin Heidegger, the German philosopher and member of the Nazi Party. I guess birds of a feather flock... Whatever.

I never understood the anti Catholic thing unless it’s their actual charities. And even then, sometimes you find like 300 infants buried in a mass grave under a laundry. I don’t think I need to mention their other claim to fame.

ETA- Why the evangelicals hate the idea. The rest of us know how awesome majority Catholic countries are for women.
