  I have a family member who is a social worker and works with seniors. She says it’s true that many illnesses that come with age can increase angry, aggressive behavior, because no one likes being disoriented and confused. However, it doesn’t explain truly hateful behavior UNLESS that person was already harboring those thoughts.
  One example that my relative often sees is when extended family or church members become aware of domestic abuse as a couple ages. It’s not that the husband suddenly started beating his wife when he got dementia... it’s that he was doing it for decades, but he was able to keep a charming mask on in public, and she was able to hide the abuse out of shame. But as one or both of them starts losing their filter, then they can’t hide it any longer.
  In my own life, I saw it when my mom became very ill and no longer able to walk. She turned into a toddler - terrified of being alone, frustrated that she did not have control over her daily activities, and cranky with her family and caretakers. However, her core values did not change - she kept being the idealistic community-minded person she’d always been. She tried to find volunteers to take over cleaning the little abandoned lot she’d turned into a public park. When someone took her out to eat, she would check to make sure they tipped the waitstaff well. She used her impending death to guilt a friend into finally getting up the courage to take a GED test and get their diploma. And she never used a racial epithet. She hadn’t viewed people through that lens when she was younger, so those words weren’t already floating around in her brain. (Instead, she’d always had a healthy mistrust of the medical establishment, and of an abusive ex-boyfriend from 30 years before. So sometimes when she got really out of it, she’d call me “a f-ing nurse.” Or she’d mistake one of our male neighbors for her ex and tell me to get him out of our yard).

Kenyan prisons are terrible, like “shave your head when you go in to prevent lice” terrible. You need your family to bring you food and basic toiletries. Your toilet is a bucket that you are sharing with up to 20 other people.
This guy had better hope that the US embassy can pull some strings and get him put in a solitary cell, because I’ve heard that Ugandan prisons make Kenyan prisons look like Swedish prisons.
Me? I’m hoping that there’s weevils in whatever they feed him.
