“An 87-year-old woman with a knife still has the ability to hurt an officer.”

How??? If you can't handle a granny with a knife you can't be a police officer.

Not just one, but THREE of them. THREE presumably reasonably able bodied adults against one 87 year old woman with dementia who was not acting threatening.

And FOUR of them!  I mean, damn! Couldn't two distract her while the other two get the knife away without tasing or tackling her? Hell, I probably could have taken that knife away by myself!

“There was no anger, there was no malice in this,” he told the outlet. “In my opinion, it was the lowest use of force we could have used to simply stop that threat at the time. And I know everyone is going to say, ‘An 87-year-old woman? How big a threat can she be?’ She still had a knife.”

And there you go, the entire problem in a freakin nutshell.

    1. What threat? Seriously, what threat? Did she threaten one person? No.

    2. She had a knife. Ok, I have a knife on me right now. Again, that’s not a threat. And technically anything can be used as a weapon, so if she had a cane, a crutch, a wheelchair, a cell phone, a paper clip, and didn’t drop it, they would tase her?

3.if police had not used force, who would have got hurt? Oh, right, dandelions.

I know, it sounds obvious, but what if police started seeing people as people rather than imminent threats to themselves, maybe we could stop reading stupid stories like this.

Or Georgia could look outside of “mrs. mayo’s home for wussy guys with hero complexes”.

Exactly. If she wasn’t a threat, why were they bothering her in the first place?

Hell, the person who called it in even said she didn’t seem to be posing a threat. Shouldn’t that be an automatic clue to go into Wellness Check mode rather than Threat mode?

I'm no cop, detective, or even a Jr Sleuth in Training, but they didn't think to maybe check the neighborhood first and see if maybe someone might know her? There was three cops on scene. Two of them could have left to speak to neighbors and the other just monitor the situation. And then people wonder why I refer to the police as thugs.

You are so right. Your suggestion is perfect.

I am dumbfounded that none of those officers stopped to think there may be some cognitive difficulties going on, and that she just may have been wandering, which is a common symptom of dementia.

And the kicker? They still arrested her on some bullshit charges! I guess when they fuck up, they have to arrest to justify their fuckery.

Seriously, the police in this country need to get real, be honest with themselves, and do better.

That is what local cops -used- to do. They had areas they patrolled and they got to know the people in those areas, via idle chatter, or spending money in the local shops. That way they could better assist the locals and also be seen as someone who the locals could trust when bad stuff happened or was going to happen.

Somehow over the last 40 years, cops have become completely cut off from the locals, which given all the shit that they’ve done is not shocking, but it means that they are trusted less, if at all and seen more as a problem, if not an outright danger to be avoided at all costs.

The conflict between cops and the public will -never- be dealt with as long as cops are seen as outsiders and a bigger threat then the locals doing bad shit.

*“There was no anger, there was no malice in this,” he told the outlet.*

“It was just a strictly by-the-book police electrocution of an 87yo woman. No malice at all, just cool ruthless efficiency so our brave boys in blue could get back to the serious business of oppressing black folks,” he left unsaid.

*“In my opinion, it was the lowest use of force we could have used to simply stop that threat at the time. And I know everyone is going to say, ‘An 87-year-old woman? How big a threat can she be?’ She still had a knife.”*

“And true, she was not behaving at all threateningly with the knife, almost as if she was using it as a tool, but the IQ cap in our hiring requirements intentionally filter out anyone with discernment, compassion, & the ability to think critically & contextually. What can you do? Also only Blue Lives Matter,” he forgot to say.

First of all fuck these cops they can choke on syphillitic dicks.

Second of all, dude who called the cops, you know you have houses bordering your camp and it didn’t occur to you that maybe granny came from one of those? Maybe go look over there before calling the fucking cops?

Third of all, fuck these cops with a rusty chainsaw! Fucking lazy ass, stupid cowards. You could have been hurt by a granny with a knife who was picking dandelions? Really? Then maybe your bitch ass needs to find another job. Punk!

Actually, it seems as though the caller knew exactly what the woman was doing and didn’t need to call the police. If your explanation is she’s got a knife and a plastic bag, seems to be collecting field greens and doesn’t seem to be a threat - don’t call 911.

Jesus. I bet she would have understood “Ma’am, can I help you get home?”

Also, people have died being tased, and at her age, I really think it would have been appropriate to take her right to the hospital. Or, not taser her. Or tell her family. Or just generally not be a person who tases an 87 yr old who doesn’t speak great/much/any English.

Waitaminnit, she was Syrian? Is she a refugee? Because she shouldn’t have been here in the first place. See, all lives DO matter especially the blue ones. Imagine the daily threats of octogenarians that savage the cities of this country. Why, just the other day, one of them actually thought I should hold the door for her as she was coming through. Her walker presented a clear and present danger which I why I should have called the cops on her (she was Black so...) If I had known she was a threat of this magnitude, I would surely have had her tased. WTF was I thinking about.

In this particular instance, fuck that officer and his department.

“and charged with obstructing an officer and criminal trespass.”

I would love to hear how she was obstructing a police officer. More like “she got in the way of our cattle prod”.  And I doubt the club wanted her arrested for trespassing, so basically they’ll drop all charges out of the goodness of their own hearts, and hopefully get sued in the upcoming months.
