Emmie and her sister, Darcy, developed a love for soccer, and are often the only black players on their soccer teams growing up in Smithfield The two sisters were both adopted by Mark and Kate Woodward, Emmie since she was 7, and Darcy as a baby. They’ve never had an issue before.

“Skin color has never mattered. It’s never been anything that I’ve focused on,” Darcy said.

White people bringing Black babies in all white, toxic communities should not be prohibited.

All the scrutiny it takes to adopt (even with international adoptions) yet race and location of the parents seems like it isn’t a factor. Time and time again these kids grow up and realize how fucked up it was the be surrounded by whiteness when they are os clearly not. What sort of fucked up neurosis do these white people have that think that is healthy and okay.

Yeah. I read that and balked. And they’re raising dark skin black girls at that. Yikes. It always amazes me that there is never any sort of requirement for cultural sensitivity classes or anti racist parenting classes for trans racial adoptions.

It’s the problem in general with how white parents teach their kids about race—they don’t. Because race makes them so uncomfortable, they side step the issue completely, thinking that so long as they teach their kids “not to see race” then that’s a good thing.

Except it doesn’t prepare them at all for the real world when these kids are forced to interact with a variety of people and mindsets. This is how white fragility works. And I can’t imagine what it’d be like to be black kids in an all white-community. Because while, good for you, you don’t focus on race—other people won’t be as kind.

There will be a constant target on their backs by virtue of having dark skin. From being told that they’re actually white for liking “white kid shit” to actual harrassment and discrimination.

I’m sure we’ll be hearing how the girls are blowing this out of proportion, they instigated it, they should be happy the coaches didn’t call the police when one of the girls performed a hard tackle, that this wouldn’t have happened if Colin kapernick stood for the anthem, #notallehitepeople (although this happens in the pro leagues too overseas), why are they in Utah and not som city like Chicago or philly, maybe if they didn’t flaunt their blackness, and perhaps they’re expecting special treatment because they’re black (“I, a white player, was called the n word, and it didn’t bother me, and no one came to my defense, so why are these irks exciting more - blacks, always wanting more”).

Did I miss anything? Oh, yes, hopes and prayers.

I suspect these girls have had microaggressions lobbed at them before this incident but never recognized the micros as being racist.

How could they when their own parents don’t think race/racism is worthy of attention? Only big grand racist gestures are going to register.

They are being raised in an all white environment. I can’t help but wonder of the times their parents, extended family, neighbors, schoolmates have said “we don’t know the whole story” in response to a black person executed by the police. Or athletes taking a knees are “ingrates”. Or the problem with blacks is “they just don’t want to help themselves”.

Utterances such as “oh you’re so articulate” and “I know you’re black but you’re not like those blacks” are not compliments.

How do I know they have heard these things? Because I am not young. The same racist foolishness I heard yesteryear, I heard yesterday and will hear tomorrow. The same things all of us have heard from card carrying racists and from many well-intentioned whites.

As angry as I am about the racists at the game I feel the same way towards their parents. Their denial of race is just as dangerous when their kids live in Amerikkka.

If I ever have kids and I’m trying to get them into a school, if I see that the school is predominantly white—I’m turning the other way.

Not because I hate white people, but because you’re setting your kid up for failure if all he/she hangs out with is one group of people. Want to have a kid that doesn’t turn into a complete shitbag? They need to interact with kids from different cultures so they can grow a thick skin and develop empathy for other people that don’t look like them.

Geez! I guess Trump is a bigger influence on the Mormons than Romney. Then again, none of this surprises me anymore.

Nah Momons have always been like this. ALWAYS. I have found those who live outside of Utah tend to be better.

I mean wasn’t it literally baked into their religion until fairly recently that black people were inferior and shouldn’t be included?

White people who adopt black children should be required to go through a training course to never tell their black kids that, “color doesn’t matter”. It may not to them, because they’ll almost never be in a situation where just their color causes people to treat them differently by someone in power. But, trust when I say, at some point in time every black child will come across that very scenario.

My wife and I are adopting a child now and despite being Korean-American and adopting a child from Korea, we still had to undergo 10 hours of training on transracial adoption, cultural sensitivity, race awareness, white privilege, etc. I wonder if this training requirement is new or if these parents just “forgot” all that training.

Former soccer referee here. If indeed the referee was informed of or witnessed this level of spectator misconduct and did nothing, s/he should be banned from any further officiating. The referee should have immediately confronted the host coach and instructed him or her to deal with the situation. Failure to do so is then grounds for forfeiture of the match.

Granted, this is a tough thing to do, especially in what sounds like a fairly hostile environment, but officiating is not for the weak-hearted.

    To user borgohuris...

I’ll keep doing me, and you keep doing you. For all those out there that want to grey me or flag me or whatever, that’s cool I truly understand your anger. I’ve lived amongst many of you (in North Miami), lived in your homes and eaten at your table and know first hand what you are up against. I’ll still keep doing work in my community and try to open as many doors for you and yours. We’ll see how it ends up, just know that when a black person is up for a raise (maybe you or your child), promotion or job this white supremacist will still keep helping out and extending any privilege he has to help resolve the inequity that blacks have experienced in the USA, this despite your words to me here.

The only comment I have left is that I left the Mormon church because of their stance on gays and blacks and I actively protest them at their church office building. Behind closed doors I have been trying to get the founder of Sistas In Zion a black Mormon group to resign. I am talking about the people/culture in Utah not the doctrine of the Mormon Church which is abhorrent. In Utah people are leaving the Mormon Church at historical levels because their world views have changed but the formal church organization has not.

(Note: I used the child’s first name to show that he was adopted and given a culturally appropriate name and education by his parents. I truly apologize if this really does bother you.)

“Kate Woodward said. “This is bullying. This is abuse and parents need to step up and teach their kids that this is not acceptable in a high school situation or a sports situation.”

Commenting from my phone, so I can't figure out how to do quoting or strike through, but pretty sure "this is not acceptable ever" was the right way to end that sentence.

Eh, racist or just uncreative dumbasses who really want their team to win?

Half the point of home field advantage in less gentlemanly sports is the opportunity for the home team crowd to throw the opponents off their game by hurling insults and the like. If you actually manage to “shock and confuse” them? Great. you’ve given your team a big advantage. And soccer strikes me as one of those less gentlemanly sports. So, assuming they were insulting everybody on the other team, I’m more inclined to accuse them of being lazy than being racist.

Of ‘course, that excuse doesn’t really fly if they weren’t insulting the other players too, unless, I guess, the two black girls were the standout players on the other team, so throwing them off their game was the only thing that really mattered.

TLDR: A boxer punching below the belt may not hate penises, he probably just really really wants to win.

You’re trying so hard to justify racism while saying you’re not justifying it. If you use racial slurs, you’re racist. Full stop. There is no excuse whatsoever for throwing racial slurs at anyone at any point. This is not some “friendly” competitive ribbing, it's racism..

Wrong. Full stop. You (and others on these websites) can keep trying to dilute the meaning of racism to include simply using extraordinarily cruel words, but that doesn’t make that part of the definition.

Does it make somebody an asshole and somebody I wouldn’t want to know? Definitely. Is it an indicator that they might be racist? Possibly. Is it racist itself? Nope.

And of course it isn’t “friendly” competitive ribbing. As I said it’s the equivalent of punching below the belt, which as far as I’m aware is, sportsmanship wise, about as low as you can go. But sometimes an asshole is simply an asshole.
