I have never understood how non-whites can say something racist about fellow non-whites. I don’t recall my parents saying anything like that, but was pretty isolated until I went to college.

People have been hating the other forever.  Brazilians hate those from Argentina, Koreans hate Japanese,  Arabs in Iraq hate the Persians in Iran.  And they all have nothing on the hate Europeans all have for each other(look at the wars in the 1990's in Eastern Europe)

Some of the most racist stuff I’ve ever heard was while I was living in southern Mexico. I was talking to a man who needed periodic medical care for his feet because they’d been eaten by some sort of fungus, and all he could talk about was how “blacks don’t value hygiene. They just don’t care.”

To be fair, the guy had probably never met a black person in his life. Mexico is one of the least racially diverse places I’ve ever seen. It’s a beautiful country with tons of cultural diversity, but there are few non-Mexicans in Mexico.

I think that Asians suffer the most blatant racism in the US. Not the deepest. But the most blatant racism. If someone woke up and said, “I feel like being blatantly racist. I will be racist against Asians since I am most likely to get away with it.” I would think, “That is horrible, but I can see the logic.”

This is particularly true for Asian men. I, and damn near every Asian man can reel off several times when a person has said blatantly racist and sexist things about Asian men to our faces. I am half white and I look more white/ambiguous so people either don’t know I am Asian or think I won’t be offended. I am offended and I tell them so.

If anyone doesn’t agree that Asians suffer the most blatant racism, consider Steve Harvey’s televised comments on Asian men.  Had someone said that about anyone else, I doubt he would still be on the air.  Again, not the deepest, but the most blatant.  Asian men are like pigeons.  For some fucked up reason, everyone hates them, but nobody actually does anything about it.  Just mindless hate.

The most blatant. Not the deepest.

Yes, I can see that this nation has hated black people for centuries, and it hasn’t stopped. Police shootings, and random-ass arrests are examples of this. But in those instances, the police and police-callers do have explanations for their actions. Flimsy explanations and excuses to be sure.

When people are racist against Asians, it really seems as if they are thinking, “I am going to be racist right now and I don’t give a fuck what anyone thinks.” Steve Harvey and this woman are examples of this.

Go ‘head and get gone, Bettie. Ain’t nobody got time for your bullshit. That’s why Stephaine got half the vote, last week, and your ass got 11%. God don’t like ugly.

BTW, the very worst part of this was that she engaged Chang’s husband.

The various off-color remarks were heard by multiple people connected with Chang, including Chang’s husband, who spoke with Metro Times. Sean Gray says after overhearing Cook disparage Chang outside a precinct on the east side of Detroit, “I ... asked her not to speak about my wife in that manner. At that time she said to the voter that ‘these immigrants from China are coming over and taking our community from us.’ Further, she said it ‘disgusts her seeing black people holding signs for these Asians and not supporting their own people.’”

Gray, who is black, says Scott then went on to call him a “fool” for marrying Chang.

    Girl, RESIGN.

I’m guessing you haven’t seen the article on Splinter on this incident. Comments have plenty of those, though most are more generally about black people being racist in general...

Sad. Black politics need to consistently rise above the silliness and the low-hanging-fruit catcalls. Taking lessons from the Tea Party is not a good look. Yes, Detroit has outcroppings of gentrification. It’s a legitimate topic. But not everybody is a CIA plant. Much like Detroit’s Rashida Tlaib (who is Palestinian), Ms. Chang is a non-black person who has been willing to engage with urban, minority-majority communities and advocate for better policies that affect the vulnerable. Doesn’t mean that people have to vote for her, if they feel their candidate has better ideas. But it should also mean that people learn how to be discerning and look past surface-level aspects of political candidates.

Unfortunately, I predict that some Hoteps and Hotep-adjacent folks are prone to go in on some “what about these incidents where [Asian shopkeeper attacks or disrespects black customers]”, and since Ms. Chang is of Chinese ethnicity, “she’s probably down with that— keep drinking the kool-aid, negroes”.. Sigh... Detroit politics, gotta love it.. or, at least live with it... :/

To be clear, Chang was born in Detroit, raised nearby, went to college down the road, and lives there, today. She’s not someone who parachuted in from some rich area outside the region. Chang is a Detroiter, full-stop.

Like, I’m not even going to entertain Scott’s ridiculousness. Homegirl was born in Alabama. Like, Ms. Bettie, stop.

But, like, I get it. At one point, all you had to do in Detroit was be black and have a backing to find your way into government. She’s made because a non-black woman half her age came in and whipped her ass because Stephanie outworked her.

A family friend does that, but pencils hers in so that she constantly looks surprised. It’s hard to talk to her because I keep thinking “Did I just say something weird?”
