Nothing but love and praise for The Queen Of Soul and Rock N Roll architect. Ear trained musical prodigy, singer, and songwriter. She left us with so much joy.  Thank You.

Farewell Ms. Franklin. You had a wonderful voice that crossed genres and time.

My favorite song...Aretha’s version of “The Weight” with Duane Allman providing the guitar licks.

    Overheard at the 1998 Grammys:

“Pavarotti’s sick and just cancelled. Anybody know Nessun Dorma?”

Aretha Franklin: “Yeah, I got this. Have the orchestra play in my key.”

Grammy Producer: “They don’t have time to learn in your key.”

Aretha Franklin: “Nevermind, I’ll sing in his key.”

I love Sting’s look after he introduces her He’s either terrified or excited as hell:

Is this what it means to get old? I mean all the voices/songs in my head are now just voices/songs in my head, data on a computer, or a piece of plastic. those voices will never be heard again. I am sad.

As Jujy said earlier, all of our musical idols are dying.

It’s storming, gloomy, and grey here in Memphis today. Clearly this is the reason why. Legend in the game, you will be greatly missed Queen!

    Rest in Power Queen

I’m sitting at work and saw this news. I want to go home.

I remember the first time watching Major Payne and hearing the part where ‘Respect’ played. I had to have listened to “Respect” a few dozen times afterwards.

I remember first seeing the The Blues Brothers when I was quite young — in my late teens — and feeling that the movie was, in addition to being really violent (standards have sure changed) pretty racist.

It wasn’t until I got older and started getting more educated about American music history and the blues in general that I started to experience it a bit differently. Then, about five years ago someone was showing the original director’s cut, with all of the scenes and numbers left in, and I got a chance to view it in a whole different light. It’s basically just an excuse to showcase blues and pop artists of Aretha’s generation, with two guys in suits and Carrie Fisher kind of thrown in to stitch it all together.

Once I knew a little bit more about the political and historical contexts, her performance in the movie made a lot more sense and seemed less demeaning and sexist. It’s too bad she didn’t make or appear in many more movies, because like Barbra Streisand, she looked great on-camera and had a very compelling screen presence.

What I will always love about The Queen, though, is her voice. There are many singers and singer-songwriters, but Aretha’s voice was stunningly beautiful even when unornamented. Such pure, clear notes, and such tremendous musicality. Sigh.

Aretha is dead, Dick Cheney is still alive. That’s one of the ways I know there is no God.

Crazy thing I’ve heard about that movie. Apparently the studio wanted younger, hipper musical acts (i.e. Rose Royce) in lieu of older, more established artists. They obviously and thankfully did not get their way.

Can you imagine The Blues Brothers without Aretha, Ray Charles, James Brown, Cab Calloway, and John Lee Hooker?

Dan Ackroyd wouldn’t hear of it, is what I understood.  He insisted on the real thing.
