Articles like this give me hope, in that it seems like we spend so much fucking energy on Racism 101, that we can never really get into Racism 203: Colorism and Racism 501: Provisional Privilege and Proximity to Whiteness, which is what this is. And the fact that we are inching to the conversations as a people and a community? Progress! Growth!

I see exactly what happened here. White-washed Asian woman tried to pull her white adjacent card on the Black people that were there because she knew (or figured) that nothing would happen to her because shes Asian and showing off pretty much in front of her employers. They sided with her (because of course they did) but the negative pr had them can her and that’s the fucked up part about this. She didn’t get fired because she was wrong as the video proves. She was fired because they didn’t want the backlash that came with what happened.
If their mission was to TRULY provide welcoming hospitality to all guests, the manager wouldn’t have pretty much sided with that wannabe Becky. Nonwhite people of color regularly employ white supremacist rhetoric and attitudes to carry out anti-black racism. This needs to be shouted from the mountain tops because it happens ALL THE TIME and this shows it. Doesnt help that Asians marry into White America as well.

This article repeatedly calls her “privileged.” And yes, she is. But what is her privilege?
Asian privilege: Asians, particularly Asian women are considered “Honorary Whites.”
Female privilege: If she were a man, she would have been escorted out. She was coddled here. Men don’t get coddled like this. The male manager was probably afraid she would flip out and accuse him of sexism. No such fear would exist from a man. I also think that if an Asian man plopped his solitary ass on the couch like this, he would be mercilessly mocked. No coddling whatsoever.

Okay, FINE. Then you ASK the people sitting in that section if it’s OK for you to sit there. You don’t JUST SIT DOWN, your entitledness. You don’t know if they’ve temporarily compressed to 2 couches for a moment or if there’s someone else in the bathroom. And you CERTAINLY don’t tell them to “shut the fuck up” or any version thereof when they point out to you you’re sitting at their table.

  I have to admit I went through a phase last year where I just kept noticing people’s behavior in public spaces; mostly spaces that involved queuing in front of customer service desks at stores. I had to stop because the trend I kept noticing was white people making their own lines, seeing a gap intended for people to cross to get to another part of the store, or just advancing to the side of the desk to avoid the line altogether. Sometimes, these people were just oblivious, but more often than not, I noticed they would glance back to see if anyone was going to say anything. So they knew what they were doing was wrong, but they were banking on people just not wanting to cause a confrontation. More often than not, they were wrong. I should start doing this again; having a reason to call people out on bad behavior can be cathartic as hell.
