The only false equivalency I hate more than “if a white person said that it would be racist” is “but the Irish were treated just as bad”.

Yeah. That one is worse because: 1- it’s not true; 2- it acknowledges the injustice of the situation; 3- it’s being deployed to say the correct action is not to address the injustice, but just wait around until a new group of others arrives so you can join in shitting all over them. Feck that.

Allow me to respond to the grey beneath you...

A few Irish children whose parents CHOSE to come to the US were kidnapped for a brief period in NY...

“I’m not saying that Irish people were treated “just as bad” as African-Americans, I’m just saying that dismissing the shit people did to them is ignoring another very real, very horrible, portion of American history.”

No one is ignoring history, but here’s the difference: Once the Irish were accepted as white, they were just as content to turn around and shit on minorities just like the Anglos who shitted on them. They’ve been complicit with the oppressors a lot longer than they were victims.

In order to assimilate, all they had to do was drop their accents and change their names. Black and brown people can change those things too, but they’ll still never be accepted by the oppressors en masse because they can’t change their skins.

People who claim reverse racism are absolutely being intentionally obtuse. Google is thing that exists and it’s not hard to find information about racism (institutional or otherwise), so I really don’t buy the whole “they don’t know better” argument. They do know better, they just don’t care.

They don’t want a genuine discussion, they don’t want to learn or share ideas. They just want to dominate and control. It’s pretty fucked up. As soon as someone says “reverse racism” I’m like “oh ok, now I know who you are.”

Also, they need to learn to take a fucking joke.

They are too busy making bullshit statements like referring to racial equality as “a basic moral principle that was for a long time in this country, conventional wisdom...That was the standard and for a long time almost everybody in america believed it or claimed to believe it” to google anything.

A few days ago, I received a direct message from a twitter follower who shared the 2018 Wypipo Tournament with a white friend, who the Twitter follower said is married to, and has a child with, a black woman. He shared the response with me, which was basically: If a white person wrote that about black people it wouldn’t be cool.

Wait, so you know the McClure Family?

No one uses “wypipo” out of anger, hate or even retribution. It is a small symbolic reclamation of power. It is a symbolic swipe at a powerful monster.

Plus, and I say this as a member of the aforementioned pipo, it’s FUNNY. It’s a great term, it says SO much without really being offensive, unless you are whiny thin skinned little shit.

It’s like Hari Kondabolu said in his recent Netflix special: white people are so used to being the default that when their whiteness gets remarked upon, even if it’s just to point out the color of their skin, it makes them uncomfortable.

It is a baby punch to the gut of a behemoth. No matter how much it hurts their ego, we all know it doesn’t leave a mark. They will make sure of that.

    Here, I partly +agree.

The right wing wildly distorts and selects the presentation of your jokes to enflame the tribal and reactive white lower class. That baby punch will be presented by Fox News as meth-drenched; heavily dusted red meat to be dismissively tossed to the toothless garbage people who actively cosign Trump’s open racism.

Any reader know your approach, Michael. The demagogues of Fox News will pour gasoline on your harmless observations. The right wing expects country joe m’f’ker to vote against his and his families own well being and tear down his own safety net to do one thing:

Keep poorer US white actively hating and attacking US ethnic minorities rather than trying making any of the white-appearing corporate overlords even uncomfortable.

Yeah that’s a classic but if you say anything too much it wears down the impact. Honky is over 60 years old. Time for some new material. Especially when you consider that we probably hit peak honky like 40 years ago.

I’ve been trying to describe this phenomena of white people claiming not to be racist and I think I’ve figured it out...they really don’t get what racism is.

White people are using the defamation approach to racism. Which means, it’s not racist if it’s “true.” The argument goes that blacks are lazy or more prone to violence are “truths,” and therefore, not racist.

Of course, that ignores the entire premise of racism, which is that a you believe a black people are “inferior” to white people.

I can see that. I think some of them also just ignore/aren’t aware of history/didn’t do well in social studies, and so they just assume that black people are on a level playing field with them. It leads them down this path of fallacy where they think: “Slavery is over, and they got Civil Rights, so there’s no more racism, right? So all things being equal, what do blacks have to keep complaining about?” And then from there it leads to bootstraps and so on.

Literally had a conversation yesterday at work, where someone brought up the existence of black and minority owned business groups - organizations that promote the work of black/minority firms - and questioned why we need those and how there couldn’t be a white firms organization. I said “uh, the entire industry is a white organization.” I was at a conference just a week or so ago and every single face on every single panel was white and male, with the exception of one white woman, and probably 95% of the audience was white and probably 85% male.

They quickly backpedaled and said some shit about there still being progress to be made.

They literally don’t see the problem of walking into a room full of white men, because that is the standard. That’s baseline. So, they don’t see anything wrong. My company has made a big push for diversity over the past 3-4 years, and has been rather successful. I wonder if it is starting to make people uncomfortable.

Listening to white people complain about reverse racism is like hearing the UFC world heavyweight champion bitch and moan about being punched in the gut by a toddler.

I would watch both these shows.
