Another loosely related reason for the racist whataboutists throwing around that fake talking point is because they liked to tie it back to Obama. The Chicago rhetoric went wide-spread back when we still had an educated, responsible president. The implication was that Obama was weak on crime since this went on under his watch as a senator.

      This.

He was a senator for 3 whole years too. Also why would a senator, representing his state have anything to do with local policy? Its just racist finger pointing.

In October of 2016, THIS was the reason my dad told me he was voting for Trump. And I’m not talking about reasoned explanations either, I’m talking foaming at the mouth, screaming at me about how Obama didn’t do shit for Chicago or ‘the black community in general’. Yeah we don’t talk much anymore.

I don’t doubt for a second that there’s a massive helping of racism in the right’s flogging of the issue, but I’d also add that part of the issue is that the city has for so long had a sort of romanticized rep for mayhem and violence, obviously going back at least to the Capone/Dillinger/etc. days. And not just here, overseas, too; when I lived in Joburg (a city w/ plenty of its own struggles w/ criminal violence, suffice it to say) and people asked where I was from, and I said Chicago, their faces would light up and they’d invariably respond with something like “Chicago? Bang! Bang!” as they made a trigger pull motion with one hand, or a reference to The Untouchables, or what have you. And I mean, it was a town where you could literally rent a pistol by the hour back in the day. So, there’s that whole established mythos to contend with at the same time.

Also, a murder capital has to be a major city and Chicago bills itself as “The Second City” (after New York).

This. I spent almost half my life in Europe, including high school, and most Europeans know nothing about the cities listed in the article as being more violent than Chicago, with the exception of New Orleans but it’s only famous for music and food, and in later years, Katrina. I don’t think they’ve even heard of Kansas City or St. Louis, and Newark only if they’ve flown into the airport to visit New York. Chicago is famous for the mob history, the Untouchables and later on, gang violence as reflected in movies and TV shows.

Good article.  “What about Chicago?” has become one of the right’s favorite lines.

If it isn’t “what about Chicago” then it’s “what about black on black crime”

Particularly the pro-gun right. Chicago’s sensationalized murder rate is routinely help up in those circles as an example of why gun control is and would be a failure.

And don’t forget that all sides like to throw salt on Rahm’s ass, too. I’m not going to say he doesn’t deserve some of that ish but scores of folks are hoping he fails ‘biggly.’

This is a great article. Those that were profiled spoke real truths about the city and its ills. I’m a proud lifelong Chicagoan....South Sider. When I was a teenager, the murder rate was around 1k annually for years. This crime spree is bad, but hasn’t hit that milestone yet. As always, people want to lay the blame at our feet for what plagues our communities. Nevermind the fact that the city has intentionally, for decades, made concerted efforts to warehouse and disenfranchise us every chance they got. Now is no different.

For those who flee the city, I’m not mad at them but I think they’ll see that it’s a fucking charade. The mayor on down will tell black people how bad a neighborhood is until they up and leave and the moment they do, they pour money into it and it’s the next hot real estate market. Thankfully, there have been a few black neighborhoods that didn’t fall for the okeydoke and forced the city to take care of the crime they helped create. And this is what I think needs to happen more often. The city is complicit and they have the means and the resources to fix what’s broken. Make them fools do their fucking job (and not just send more police) and things can have a chance of improving.

I think this is the case for any major black city. The idea of black utopia cannot exist in a white persons mind. It breaks the illusion of racism. Even white “allies” can not see the truth. The fact that black people are fully capable of living decent normal lives would absolutely shock them. All they think we do is get pregnant and shoot each other. In their minds we aren’t bettering ourselves. They want to keep us to the side but yet they want to be us and make money off us.

    So then…why Chicago?

Because Obama’s public-service career originates, and was based in, Chicago. The right wing has been hammering it since he became the presidential candidate, and they have yet to let it go. They always trot out murder rates when they’re trying to drag black representatives and candidates. Remember when Rep. Lewis said yeah nope no inauguration for me thanks and the GOP went straight at Atlanta’s crime and murder rate? It’s their favorite dog whistle because it works.

For older Americans, the events of 1968 (DNC riots, King assassination riots) are the more likely Chicago-violence association.

Grain of salt and other disclaimers apply.

What about Gary, Indiana? Or as I like to call it, “Chicago Armory?” Why is Mike Pence so weak on crime? I hear he has a gay rabbit and never sent it to gay-shock therapy. What a wimp.

      EXACTLY

I think it’s important to simultaneously tie this back to lax gun laws in the surrounding states in addition to the lack of community reasons.

Chicago doesn’t need 600 more fuckin’ cops.

Exactly, Chicago has an issue where it is very close to the lax gun control state Indiana. The problem with guns in Chicago can be traced to Indiana.

This is to the dumbass grey who responded to you: Where do you think the heroin that is killing white America in droves is sold? Do you understand that no opiate is sold Over the Counter(OTC), that by law you must have a prescription to purchase it? Do you really think all that OxyContin and Fentanyl was legally acquired? Why are you, an obvious child, in Grown Folks Business?

I think you missed another key factor. The Chicago Tribune’s editorial policy for the past 8 or so years has been to sensationalize any violence in Chicago, no matter how insignificant, along with anything that black kids do that they don’t like (e.g. headlines to the effect of: roving bands of black teens descend on loop, create chaos; black teens appear at northside beach, create chaos; black teens appear on Navy Pier, white people panic; etc.)

The latter stories are largely nothingburgers, but the Tribune then searches for some real crime that occurred and then ties it into the ‘roving bands’ to sensationalize this shit - that’s the ‘chaos’ - some some kids got dinged for shoplifting and it’s because a ‘roving horde’ rode the CTA up from the southside to make trouble. It’s a bunch of bullshit, but the tribune sensationalizes the living shit out of this stuff to move papers and to get clicks.

So, when the local paper is constantly blaring out that violence is out of control and roving bands of (black) teens are on the prowl and there’s more violence happening and it doesn’t really matter if it’s actually signficant or not, the media narrative gets created.

The Tribune makes its money by tearing its city down.

I’ve always felt the Trib thinks of themselves as a “national” newspaper, rather than one for the city. They always have an outsiders viewpoint of most things.
