I know the student loan situation in this country is unnecessary and ridiculous (I just started the long process of paying my own off), but if she took out so many loans that they actually wouldn’t allow her to take any more out, at that point wouldn’t it make sense to just go to an in-state public university for probably much cheaper? I’m sure Spelman was her dream school, is it really worth it if it’s going to cost her that much?

That being said, I’m happy it’s worked out for her regardless.

This is the entire reason I didn’t go to an HBCU. It was just way too much money, especially for undergrad.

Our family had to make a similar decision. While my son is dying to get out of the house, and have the full 4 year college experience. Financially it’s just not possible for his dad or me. Fortunately he’s super understanding about this. So when he graduates HS next year, it’s 2 years at a community college, then transferring to live on campus, finishing out there. And because he’s spent his entire academic life at majority White schools, I’m hoping he chooses at an HBCU.

I never bothered to ask anyone this question before. Hopefully a reader could offer a bit of advice. Just as long as the student is accepted into a university, the community college offers the necessary courses, and the comm. coll. credits are transferable to the chosen university. Does it really matter where the student begins their college career? I always thought just as long as the issues of univ. acceptance, course availability, and credit transferability are taken care of. All that ultimately matters is the name of the school that’ll end up on the BA degree. However, want to know if my son’s choice to split his 4 years will have any detrimental effect on career choices.

Btw. Not sure if this information is relevant in answering my question. Chosen major is criminal justice. There’s no decision on what to do with the degree after school. But he’s looking in the area of non-blue law enforcement(he’s already decided against cop), or possibly the legal industry(paralegal or lawyer).

We should start up a collection for black folks struggling and call it the Rooting For Everybody Black Fund.

Shit, I never realized that my student loans now could potentially affect my future child’s ability to get them.

This makes creating generational wealth for Black people even harder.

This isn’t  a good news story. This is a story of a failed system.

Because Nayaa had already maxed out on loans

So she’s going to end up in debt for the rest of her life too? I thought you said this story had a happy ending.

I think you nailed America’s ROOT problem. We keep repeating the same mistakes and get upset when we come into roadblocks to the comfort of familiarity.

Thanks for the update. ai read the first run of the story and didn’t find a GoFundMe link. I just donated. Everyone else should give up a week’s worth of Starbucks and do the same. (I don’t drink coffee so I had a bit to give.)

Gee, wow, it’s almost like, if the American people can pull together to do stuff like this out of charity so often, maybe we could afford to send every college-age man/woman who wants to in the country... for... free?

    Nahhhh...
