    a manager mistakenly thought they were possibly shoplifting and asked a police officer that happened to be in the store to talk with the customer.

    It wasn’t a mistake, though. She assumed that the black woman was stealing, that’s not a mistake, that’s profiling. 

    At Staples, we want all customers to feel welcome in our store

    Well, now we don’t. I’ll be at Office Depot until they do something shady then it’s off to Office Max...etc until I have to make my own office supplies.

    Jeez. Every corporate briefs their staff that unless they actually see someone lift the merchandise and then leave the store you do not confront or call cops. This is just pure racism and harassment, you can’t even call it jumping the gun. They saw a pregnant black woman and decided that she must be using a fake belly.

      All of those corporations have insurance that covers lost, stolen, or unrecoverable items. They tell staff not to confront becasue they don’t want to pay for funeral expenses should your ass decide to be a hero and get shanked and/or shot and die in the process. Corporations can be wealthy AND cheap like that...

      They have cameras and security sensors at the door to confirm shoplifting, but at the same time no one making what Staples pays a cashier or stockboy is going to risk a bullet knife or a fist for goddamn office supplies.

    Like what could she possibly stealing at staples that would even look like a pregnant belly? Maaaaybe this could fly at a Target or somewhere where they sell clothing and soft goods but staples is paper and calculators and pens and shit. The cop and the manager should be publicly shamed. They went out of their way to embarrass a uber-pregnant black lady just because they could.

      I had that same thought. File folders, packages of pens, glue sticks, rulers and all the other stuff kids need for school would stick out like crazy against a twin sized baby belly. I just don’t see how anyone could think someone could hide non-soft items unless they thought the bump was a fake belly. So wrong.

    After a quick conversation, the issue was resolved, the manager apologized to the customer and refunded their transaction due to the inconvenience.

    Oh, see what she should have done upon realizing they were going to give her her purchase for free (because nothing pays for dignity like comping some 3 ring binders and over priced pens), and what I would have done was been all like “dont forget to ring up all the other stuff I forgot...that’s still on the shelves...lemme show you. I am pregnant you see, and couldn’t possibly carry it all”
