$3K for a running vehicle in reasonably good condition. I’m curious to know what the CP voters thinking is. The car is dull as dishwater and will need a timing belt soon, but that doesn’t make it a crack pipe price.

We are thinking you could have something 15 years newer for that price.

dull as dishwater and needs a timing belt, paint, stereo, and the rest thats wrong underneath-which isnt going to be fun on a front wheel drive car.

and its not sporty at all.

    CP <<=====|N====>> NP

This is going to be one of those generation gap NPOCP cars, for I can almost guarantee that the CP voters are younger and probably have never seen one of these, let alone drive one. I remember these being well though of when new, and being pretty sporty for their time. I’m not a big “car as an investment” person, but I can see buying this, doing some maintenance, driving it for a little bit, and at the very least getting your money back when you sell it.

The fact you can buy a 15 year old newer car with manual and 6 cylinder for the same price is why this deserves a CP.

      Image for article titled

I’d rather have this i6 BMW for the same price.

The Bimmer is easier to maintain too. You can reach anything on those engines with little effort. Keep up with the maintenance(a lot of it) and you will be happy. Fail to do so and you become a person who complains about lack of reliability

That is crazy low mileage for something almost 30 years old. But CP for those seat belts. I had almost forgotten about those. That was a bad era. Thanks a lot for reminding me.

Even more nightmarish is how ASC handled the passive seatbelt rule when they chopped the roof off of cars. Google 240SX comvertible seat belts.

      Enjoy!

Literally the only reason I bought a 95 Legacy vs the 94 Legacy GT I was looking at. Both were in the same condition (99% rust free - in New England no less). The GT had 4.11 gears and a LSD vs 3.9 and open but those seat belts.....

I was once tortured for a weekend in the back seat of one of these. The girl I liked invited me on a weekend roadtrip with her — and her boyfriend. In her new Maxima, just like this one. The worst thing was that the boyfriend, like the Maxima, was perfect in every way. Conclusion of the weekend was not “how could she choose him over me” but “how could I ever compete with a guy like that, and also, she has a really nice new Maxima.” It’s a wonder that all these years later, I’ve developed neither a cuck fetish nor an aversion to Nissans.

Anyway, this thing came from Copart or a buy here pay here trade in, and the seller paid $500 max for it. I say get the seller to pay for the timing belt job and nice price it is.

I was like fifteen! They were about two years older. Thanks for the empathy, but it left no long term scars, and soon enough, I had a SHO.

190 is for the VE engine introduced in 92 for the SE models. This has the VG which was in the 300zx, and I think continued into pathfinder

The VG30E was good for 160.  The later VG30DE was the 4 cam motor which had 190.

I had a buddy in high school whose parents bought one of these, slightly older model. The biggest thing about it was that it talked. It would tell you the door was ajar or the lights were on. That’s when we thought talking cars would be a good thing.

Beyond that it was a boring but well made basic car. Now it’s a boring old car.  CP.

My 86 300ZX talked back to me, too.  Even time I hit a bump, it was “Left door ajar.”  I finally ripped her voice box out.  Soon thereafter the interior lights started blinking over bumps and I had to change the door switches, which solved the problem.  I still left her mute.

Of the 20 cars I’ve owned in my 23 driving years, the one I hated the most was my ’92 Maxima SE, so I come to this vote extremely biased, but the 5-speed and the VG30E have swayed me. If this had the VE30DE, I would have crack piped this so fast…

    Nice Price.

I had a 92VE as well and I loved it, what was wrong with yours? I put 100k miles (225k) on mine. Besides eating injectors it was reliable.

What was wrong with mine? Maybe if I knew the answer to that, I wouldn’t harbor such resentment toward it. The only thing I was able to successfully diagnose was the intake cam springs that broke, which is something the VG doesn’t have. But that wasn’t enough to get it to reliably run right. I replaced everything I could think of, and it would still randomly, and at the worst possible times, go into a limp mode.

About the third time I lost all power while trying to merge onto the freeway, that car cemented its legacy as my least favorite car.

The power locks would also randomly lock me in. I would have to use the key fob to unlock the doors from inside, but that obviously wasn’t VE-related.

edit to add:  Maybe you got a good one, or maybe I got a bad one, but my experience has turned my off of the VE for good.

It’s tough to vote yes on what’s now a 28 (?!) year old car, but 90s Nissans are peak “good car” for reliability and fun.

Timing belt job should be fairly straightforward and cheap. That should help haggle the price a little bit more, which means for less than 3K, you can get a nice reliable vehicle to drive that should be a bit of fun as well. I’d buy it for my kid, so they can have a car to learn stick on that isn’t a Civic, and can drive it until they graduate college with minimal repairs. NP !

Agree with using timing belt issue as a factor in haggling down. This is actually worth the asking price to me but without the worry of losing timing anytime soon, or whole valves.

Straightforward and cheap, HA! It’s a pain in the ass on a Z31 300ZX, and you can actually reach the front of the engine fairly easily. I can just imagine the fun trying to do with with a inch of room next to the side of the engine bay.
