I have a ex friend that has fucked more black men than I have and still managed to try to defend Trump. I told her ass and I quote. “As many of the black dicks that you have jumped on, you mean to tell me you support Trump? And not the lives of the men who you fuck?” she had NO reply. We haven’t spoken since then.

Silence is the natural reaction for being exposed for blatant bigotry. Black bodies have been fetishes for wypipo. We can go all the way back to Queen Marie Thérèse of France and her “relationship” with her slave Nabo. You can literally have a child with a black person and still not see them as your equal.

I’m lovin’ it! It's unfortunate a friendship broke up. But I'm glad you called her out on her bullshit. Has she made any attempt at contact?

OK, I’m a white feminist - one who posted “Can I resign from the white race?” on an Antwon Rose discussion thread, but still...not asking anyone to tell me/us how to fix things, or trying to defend anyone. I’d just like some input, if possible: where do you/me/everyone go from “giving up on white people”?

I post this with some trepidation, because maybe I’m falling back on white privilege without intending to. But I’m trying to learn.

Hi there. You are one of my people so I’ll take this question. None of this is personal. This is how you learn. It was helpful, very helpful, to me when I was just starting out and even now, to reframe every incident and every response I wanted to make. Reframed how? If this was an article about sexism/misogyny, and some dude said what I’m about so say, would I be mad? Is this a situation in which I would tell some bro to sit the fuck down and shut the fuck up? Would I be yelling at the screen about how “if you aren’t doing this then it’s NOT FUCKING ABOUT YOU”?

The first three steps of good ally-ship are sit the fuck down, shut the fuck up, and really fucking listen. This means, when I feel attacked or like me and my people (white women) are being disparaged, it’s a sign that I need to examine my own behavior. I need to examine my own internal shit that I’m still working on, and work on it a little harder. I need to own my racism and my thoughtless microaggressions and my own history. And I need to do it quietly, over here, and not interrupt.

It’s hard. It’s shameful and embarrassing to admit to myself that I have treated other people poorly and thoughtlessly and that I have added to the burden of feeling unsafe. But it’s literally the only way to change. And I’m doing okay to be honest. I still find myself having knee jerk thoughts sometimes that are unfair and uncharitable and racist and I stomp them immediately. But I’ve made progress.

Once you have a handle on that, or even before, you have to speak out. And I don’t mean going up to black people and telling them how woke you are. Nobody likes cookie seekers. See bros/performative feminism. I mean, when you are in a group of white people and they say something fucked up, you point it out. It doesn’t mean you start pointing fingers and screaming bigot (although hey, if it floats your boat). But stuff like “what do you mean by that?” Or “I don’t get that joke” or “Seriously?” This is theoretically nonconfrontational but racists will be FUCKING FURIOUS in response to the most gentle of tones.

Part three is the hardest. Don’t reward racists. With attention, with friendship, with time. The “dynamic of the friend group” is nothing. It’s trash. Compared to the dead children and slaughtered black men and women and concentration camps. If you really want to get better, to do better, you will have to change yourself and your life. It’s not easy or fun or comfortable. And not one of the people you want be an ally to care if you have a sad about not hanging out with your slur dropping BFF.

Harsh? Yes. It is fucking harsh. We don’t have time for gentle handholding and if you demand it, well, you suck. We suck.

The Democratic party has a choice. Either they represent the opposition or they service the same billionaires.

Sadly, the party has already chosen.

    That Sharon Trujillo’s tweet.

I am still trying to figure out what she was trying to say.

Forever suspicious about someone from America being blatantly proud about their Spanish heritage.

Once I lost I’d go ahead and give my real opinion too. Sounds like she might not be fake enough for politics. The catch-22 of Washington seems to be that to get anything done you have to be a corrupt liar but those qualifications keep your constituents from being able to trust that you will represent them fairly. Democrats fuck poor Blues, Republicans fuck poor Reds and billionaires of all colors, creeds and nationalities pat themselves on the back for a job well done.

You’re right about the theory, but you’re not correct about the source of the problem. SHE is not the problem — THEY and their defensiveness are the problem.

Hundreds of thousands of POC who’ve tried to tell millions of other white people (and some of the white people who have studied this a little further) have been through this dance tens of millions of times. White people who are more addicted to white supremacy than they are interested in actual justice are the problem, and MLK said as much 50 years ago. Unfortunately, we still have to say it, because white people are just that stubborn.

She is not the problem. I’m sure (giving you the vaunted benefit of the doubt) that you weren’t consciously trying to create that narrative, but justice requires it be corrected wherever there’s an attempt to promulgate it any further.

A system where winning means being the biggest liar and con man is definitely the problem. I just wonder when change from within will become institutionally impossible.

I was extremely annoyed that she didn’t win that seat, but not surprised. I haven’t lived many places whiter than Denver. For as long as I remain in this bucket of wallpaper paste, it’ll be my mission to get this woman elected though. Giving up on me and my people is about the strongest political platform I have, and I’m glad that she just came out and said it. There aren’t enough progressive “good” white people who actually put the effort in to create change, instead of just trying do “good things” to get ego boosts, so relying on “good” white people to help is a setup for failure. We don’t help. Fuckin drop us like the stones we are (p.s. if you’re a grey, and that comment made you angry, then I was speaking about you specifically and I hope you stay mad all week)

I wonder if this is what trump fans mean when they say they like that he “says wat he means”

Seriously though, Colorado is super white. I actually get uncomfortable now when I’m at events and there are zero POC. None. Like, we have a decent hispanic population, and there’s only white people around? Or heck, going to high school and there’s 2 black kids... in the whole school of 2000...

I’m glad she called us out. Many Coloradans act progressive, but then they also like to live their gentrified lives. Denver itself is getting super gentrified now...

I was actually proud of my father for voting for Polis, knowing he was a gay man. It was a step!

Then I had to have a conversation with him about how it’s bad that cops are shooting innocent black men and killing them... and somehow he tried to stand with the cops and their fear. I then started yelling “THEY’RE FUCKING DEAD NOW” with my grandfather in the room no less. Of course he was upset that I cussed in front of my grandfather instead of being pissed at innocent men being murdered.

Long story short, Colorado has promise, but needs to get off its ass and act right.

It’ll be tough for sure, though. I feel like Colorado kind of has the “donate-to-charity-so-I can-be-smug” attitude towards actually being progressive. Put in a little effort to feel good about yourself, but not so much to upset the status quo or actually affect change. We’re coasting by with a C- because we know how to fluff an essay

If someone still doesn't understand the difference between actual racism and resenting the white majority for complicity and inaction, maybe they shouldn't be regarded as a serious part of the conversation going forward. It takes a serious level of obtuseness and willful blindness for someone to still have that mindset. Maybe it would help if people set the example that logically flawed arguments like that aren't going to be taken seriously anymore?

Siiiiigh. I love my state. I really do. But we fucked up here. DeGette is a decent politician, Hell I have voted for her several times (she’s been in office for like a million years). But Saira Rao was different, radical, outspoken and in this political climate this is EXACTLY what we need.

Her comments are spot on (and I’m white).  For as progressive as we are with a lot of things, we still have a long way to go here.  I hope she doesn’t give up, I hope she continues to run for public office as the progressive, outspoken politician she is and she’ll have my vote again.
