If any black person thinks fighting for immigrants is “fighting other people’s battles” than they need to get way off the stage. The policies and the framework created to harass immigrants has for years been used against black people, both immigrants and the ancestors of slaves, and will be used against us again. Much of immigration enforcement is driven by profit motives. When they’ve locked up and kicked out all the immigrants, the hunger for profit will still be there and who do you think they will turn to next.

Secondly, black people should know better than anybody that when equality isn’t protected for some people, its not really guaranteed for anyone. We have a duty to help other struggling people and the gift to show how people can survive in a racist America hell-bent on your destruction. That is why African-American culture is appreciated world wide by people in the underclass of their societies. Game recognize game, and the struggle recognized the struggle. Preach on.

You are correct and yet there’s more.

Civil rights were won on our backs and benefit white women more than anyone and yet they continually fuck us over.

Japanese get reparations and never advocated for us for reparations.

Our foremothers/fathers died for all the minorities that followed us and seldom do you see the same from all the other demographics dying and fighting for us.

Black lgbtqi are abused, arrested, murdered, have HIV at alarming rates.. where are the gay white male advocates for us?

Who is on the front line with us?

We will fight because in order to live and survive in this land we must, and others will continue to benefit from our struggle just like all of america has for close to 400 years.

So, yea, everyone is invested in the outcome, but the work that is done, day to day and all across this land is, as it always has been, led by black women first and foremost.

      Oh please.

Nobody fights for us but they damn sure eat off the work often black people in general and black women in particular do.

So no - black women need to be as self-interested as everyone else. I looked at the chick on the statue of liberty and thought....you do that same ish for police brutality, mass incarceration, systemic racism?

      No?

Then why you up there now.

So, should black people care about immigration?

    Yes.

Should Latinos, instead of proving their Whiteness work with other minority communities to solidify political power?

    Yes.

Should Blacks and American-born Latinos be better advocates for immigrants?

    Yes.

Should Asians, Muslims, and Southeast Asians forge better alliances with Blacks and Latinos instead of trying to be the Model Minority?

    Yes.

The fact that we’re not doing these things is part of why this country’s in the mess it’s in.

      All of this.

Folks need to realize that divide-and-conquer has been a thing since the colonists in Virginia got antsy over slaves and indentured servants being too friendly. Power imbalances would shift so much more if folks accept that for those in power white is subjective and not based on some metric of ‘goodness’ and being as shitty if not shittier to fellow brown and browner folk as they are. Positive stereotypes and “being the exception” are just as disgusting as negative stereotyping and hard-core profiling and it all needs to be checked.

Lucy Gonzales Parsons, Senator Dennis Chavez, Mendez vs Westminster (important predecessor to Brown v Board of education), Hernandez vs Texas (US Supreme Court victory that outlawed discrimination on class and ethnic distinction), Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta... just some of the civil rights work done by Latinx. Latinx are not a monogamous group and are plagued with colorism and bigotry too. It’s why so many black immigrants are left out of the conversation. So much more could be done if it wasn’t framed as a Latinx only problem.

When hasn’t black women had to lead the charge against policies or agendas forwarded by bigots, xenophobes, domestic abusers, pedophiles, and a veritable smorgasbord of scumbaggery??? All while being subjected to misogyny and subjugation by their own male counterparts, no less!

But despite that extremely unfair moral workload, yes, black people should still care about immigration, along with every other civil right Herr Trumpenfuhrer is whittling away from this country. Because once the Reich Wing’s done with Muslims, Latinos and “the queers,” they’ll have more time to focus on either re-enslaving “the darkies” or outright murdering them.
