“Do white people have barbershops? I know they get their hair cut, but I always assume they don’t talk to each other in their barbershops like black people do. I picture a lot of whistling and quartet singing.”

When I first moved out of the hood, I got curious about how the other half lives, so when I was in need of a cut one day, I wandered around and here’s what I can tell you: White people go to SuperCuts. These are unisex salons where they get their hair cut with flowbees and order their hairstyle off of a chart with numbers for the hairdos like a drive through combo menu. There’s definitely some whistling, but I never hung around long enough for the barbershop quartets. I still go back around my old way to get my hair cut to this day because of what I saw at SuperCuts.

Barbershops for White guys are pretty much a con to be honest as most of us just get a trim, we don’t do anything with it style wise.

Instead of paying someone a tenner to trim mine every 6-8 weeks a couple years back I started just doing it myself in the mirror with a set of clippers and it’s just as good, even if trying to orient your hand while looking at the back of your head in two mirrors is a pain.

if we are all christians who are following the light of Christ then we must find it in our hearts to forgive.

That “Black people should learn to forgive us for enslaving and beating the shit out of them physically, governmentally and psychologically for decades” train is never late.

Here’s a thought: Try ASKING for forgiveness, MFers.

But then they hit you with that “real” forgiveness is about the person doing the forgiving bullshit.

There’s a very dark joke I’ve heard about the English and the Irish that ends with the Englishman saying “we’ll never forgive you for what we did to you.”

I always thought this worked equally well for American white people & black people. Some people seem to carry around a lot of resentment over the fact that their ancestors were the bad guys.

White People: You need to learn to forgive for the terrible shit we’ve done to you.

Black People: You need to stop doing the terrible shit first!

White People: Civility! Quit being divisive.

I really don’t know what it is about being shot out of a decrepit penis, fertilized in a womb like kombacha, and birthed into the world in all their pink glory like really wet bubble gum that makes these White folks we ever gave a damn about their opinions.

I’m also not sure what their problems are with commas, but I’m 200% positive they hate commas more than they hate Black folks talking about white folks.

Aye. White folks(you know who you are. Only the smart ones know the lingo, the rest of you fall for the bait every single time). We don’t care about how you feel, what you want, what your problem is, or why you think you matter, but we do have a question: Who told you to give us personal ancedotes about yourself?

I read your opinion piece on the Root today and would like to start a dialogue with you. I am white, straight and 42 years old.

Bitch this is not a dating profile. Stop this now.

Sean, you’re fucking creepy and I hope you never orgasm a day in your life.

This comment hurt my feelings, and I would like to discuss that with you. /s

I’m actually not entirely sure why it is that, as soon as they start a racist tirade, every single one of them forgets where every single punctuation (except for the exclamation point, racists love their exclamation points.) is.

And holy shit, Jesus Freak up top... Scripoture? Really, bruh? What do you have against Spellcheck? Next time, don’t do a hit of acid before watching ‘The Passion’. (I’m just assuming, because that was the last time I thought Jesus was talking to me.)

White folk in america who worship jesus and always talk about blacks should forgive them and move on...

... those are the same white folks who actually murdered their savior...

..for actually standing up for poor, disabled, hungry, non-synagog going, heathens, women, redlight district folk, and the diseased..while he was “best friends” with 12 other single men in their 30's.

That's why American Jesus ™ was invented.  Prosperity gospel and all that nonsense.  You're talking about that foreign, "whatsoever you do to the least of my people" Jesus that makes everyone try to be better and kind.

I think you’re doing a good job too, Michael.

Also, just started this book last night, and it’s a firecracker: White Fragility: Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism by Robin Di Angelo. It’s actually a how-to for white folks, and I found myself mmm-hmm-ing along. Pretty good stuff.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve been reading So You Want to Talk About Race by Ijeoma Oluo based on a recommendation here. Trying not to make it others responsibility to educate me, so I welcome those who assist.

“Whites” are only binary when compared to nonwhites, and many of us have our own cultural history and burdens and don’t necessarily see ourselves as white, but just as people.

I used to think like this - about race, about gender, about sexuality. “Why are these people so obsessed with labeling themselves? I’m over here just being, why can’t they do the same?”

Then I realized that this is the very definition of privilege. I think of myself as “just people” because I have not lived in a society that forced me to see myself as anything else. My successes and failures are allowed to be my own, and not seen as representative of everyone who shares my shade.

This is why so many white people cry over the nicknames: the Beckies, the wypipo, etc. It’s not because they’re slurs, it’s because you dare revoke the privilege of individuality that white people are born into. The shoe pinches when it’s on the other foot.

    Thank you for it.

Sometimes I wish I could walk through a map of a racist’s mind with them and point out all the instances where their train of thought made no damn sense at all (like calling a person of color a nigger while accusing THEM of stirring the pot), but then I worry about possibly getting trapped in that dank, dark place and think to myself; nah, I’m good.

I have many opinions regarding The Root and its content, they vary wildly as should all our opinions. We should never get entrenched in an ideology that is immovable.

But I am here to say this. If someone is trying to educate or critique Michael Harriot I would say they would need to bring their A game as far as syntax, spelling and punctuation go. Maybe a little proof read or spell check? It breaks my mind read the ignorant drivel sent his way.

Michael, I support you 2/3 of the time. Keep up the good work.
