Like that poor woman who had to find her daughter on Backpage.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/backpage-senate-report-accuses-illegal-transactions-underage-sex-trafficking/

Children/Teens/ Adults of color do not get the same quality of concern or investigation as WHITE people do, and additionally, Chicago seems to have a Missing Persons problem.

I remember reading one write up in Jet (I think, all I can find are teasers, not the full article) that detailed an 11 yr old missing boy listed as “a runaway”. At 11 yrs old you can neither legally hold a job, nor a lease. Custodial Interference is a crime. So for an Officer or a Precinct to decline to investigate is just a big old “we don’t think Black Children are worthy of our time or funds”.

Shit like this is how people like R. Kelly thrive.

When it comes to missing young girls and women race is far less of a factor than economic standing. Of course, economic standing is disadvantaged towards minorities at a societal level, but cops don’t do shit about missing young women at all, white, black or other, unless the parents are notable and have money. Sex traffickers and serial killers function because of this apathy from law enforcement. In the northeast we’ve had a few big sex trafficking rings broken up in the last few years. The common denominator among the victims, an astounding amount that were local, was coming from “broken” families and the cops saying they must be runways to excuse their not looking into it deeply. As though a minor “running away” is not someone they need to find.

Forget it if the cops assume an adult women is in the sex industry. Then they might as well not even exist. The last two big serial killer dumping grounds that have been found, the Long Island Serial Killer and the Mesa in Albuquerque, every identified victim was reported missing by family or friends over the last thirty years. If any of these individuals disappearing was cared about by law enforcement it’s near impossible that those killers wouldn’t have been caught. The cops didn’t even consider there was a case there though. Just a runaway or a prostitute so who cares?

I’m sorry, but in our society and most others, women are devalued; especially socioeconomically, but women/children of color are almost always seen as lesser of value/worth/purity than whiter/lighter women/children who are of a “lesser economic class*” than them.

*Nobody deserves to be trafficked/IDGAF if you are a sex worker, so long as you intend to be one, all respect, and expectation of safety to you/Horrible people in jail or otherwise do not deserve to be sexually assaulted/LBGTQ+ folks (or anyone else) should not face sexual assault ever, especially not under the guise of “reconditioning”.

Seconded. CPD seems to regard POC as collateral damage.

Same can be said about some of the residents of Chicago too.

Wait am I understanding this right? She basically did all the police work herself to track her daughter down? And had to convince traffickers to let her go? And nooooow police are investigating?

I’m not sure it’s great to put the photo and the name of a sexually trafficked minor all over the internet like this.

Very, very important story to share, could we perhaps just get a pseudonym like “16 yr old girl X” in play? I realize the local news and papers already did this, probably with parental permission, but I really don’t like the idea of these kids harassed by anon weirdos; or worse, people they have to see at schools and jobs.

I don’t like it either. She’s been through enough, I wish everyone had respected her privacy, post trauma.

    Hopefully it looked like this...

Have they found the girls that went missing in the DC area, yet? That was peak dismissiveness for me.

I 100% believe that she would have gotten more traction with the police if her daughter had been white, but in high school, I had a female-white friend who took off and this is exactly the reponse her parents got, almost word for word.

There’s definitely a racist element to this, and I’m sure it happens a hundred times more to black families than white families, but to me what this story is, is a story about how crappy the police are at performing even the basic functions with which they are tasked, and how willing they are to chalk up anyones kid to statistics.

This makes me think of the Jennifer Catcheway case which happened in my home community. Her mother called the RCMP early in the case but was ignored. Her killer still walks free partly because of this.
