I remember this case vividly. It was actually documented by the TV show First 48 but I don’t think it ever made it to air.

...And if memory serves me correct, all the police officers involved in this fiasco walked (no surprise there).

Shot by reckless assholes who fired blind entering the house, while she laid upon the couch, having a sleepover with her Grandmother.

The same Grandmother they inconsistantly reported grabbing at the gun, arresting her as she screamed for help. They’d later interview Aiyana’s parents on that same couch.

The Officers should have been fired, and charged with child abuse.

There is no good reason to hold a gun on a 3 yr old, and aren’t they supposed to escort minor children to the car, and radio for someone to collect the child until they decide who’s arrested and who’s legally able to care for the child in the event of arrested guardian? You’re going to just hold her in a possible shoot out or hostage situation?

I see why they call it Chiraq.

They call it Chiraq because of the gun violence. IJS

Cops don’t need to be acting like an occupying force, or Abu Ghraib’ing folks either. A 3yr old is not an enemy combatant.

I really do not have any kind of a solution to offer; we see what’s not working, but the Police and these kids in gangs don’t seem to care much for the people they hurt on the sidelines. So now everyone gets over-policed, and lives are ruined, and another generation turns to hustling, cos life is hard, short, and unkind.

According to court documents, the toddler had a loaded gun pointed inches from her chest, despite pleas from her handcuffed mother, Aretha Simmons, and grandmother, Emily Simmons, to turn the weapon away from the child.

How dark does your heart have to be to do something like this to a 3-year-old? Chicago police are some of the worst and they have a long history of this type of psychotic behaviour.

It’s not even a dark heart, they are fucking thugs and murderers and they are the ones who run the government and their fucking corrupt city.

And this child, brutalized by police along with her family received the same amount as a rich, white idiot who suffered “mental anguish, pain, and suffering” for being taken in by the Fyre festival.

Different states, different cases, different defendants/plaintiffs, different reasons for the judgement.

Do you also think that because this family, who’s daughter was implicitly tortured and threatened by CPD but, thank god, wasn’t killed “accidentally”, shouldn’t have gotten as much since other families who’s members WERE killed by police got lesser amounts? Or none at all?

I understand what you’re trying to say but it shouldn’t be said because it makes no sense and really, hurts the family that did manage to get something for their torture out of the CPD.

I’m not sure where you’re getting in what I wrote that I would think that this family should not have gotten as much because other families killed by police got lesser amounts.

I’m not sure how what I’ve pointed out would hurt the family.

You state you understand what I’m trying to say, but your critique suggests that you don’t, so let me be clear:

Systemic racism affects the judgments available to marginalized people in America. That a rich, white guy would receive the same amount for pain and suffering because of a bad party vs. a black family terrorized at the hands of police is yet another example of this.

If you want to argue that different courts / states / defendants are the reason for the disparity, you are free to state your case.

There is no excuse the MAGA trolls around here can offer that will excuse an officer of the law keeping a loaded gun pointed on a 3-year old.

EXCEPT as a way of torturing the family implicitly. This was the CPD trying to force someone to tell them something without actually saying it.

Whatever the man they were looking for did, whatever bad reasoning the mother or others may have had for having that man in the house at some point or at all,  you CANNOT excuse what the police did here in any way, shape, or form.

Holy fuck my heart is thumping just reading what happened to this child, suffused with anxiety while completely removed from what she actually experienced. Even a justifiably large financial settlement like this makes nothing better for the girl and her family after such trauma. I am glad they were taken seriously and not mocked like the family that got the $1 settlement. Ugh, everything is terrible.

This shows how intrenched racism is in Chicago.

They rather deplete the city budget than fix the issues. This will continue. You really want “insight” to CPD mentality, read second city cop blog.

Illinois is a solidly blue state, as is the City of Chicago. I agree, though, they should take that money and move to a safer area. Hopefully Alonzo the Criminal won't tag along, or at least go straight.

But did they - will they? And PLEASE tell me that the state child Protective agency added their names to a list of predators/abusers so that they can't work with children and the public will have fair warning.
