“As you know, we are an urban campus, and that presents challenges.”

Hi, yeah. Question from the white guy with the ‘Veteran’ pin on his chef coat. What exactly do you mean by ‘Urban’? Because I know what my father meant when he used that word, and it’s definitely not helping your cause.

Second question. Why did you scared-ass motherfuckers already have your guns drawn for a goddamn bar fight? Sound to me like the only people with ‘challenges’ are there idiots you hired to ‘keep the peace'.

Portland’s so white, urban really does just mean it’s located downtown. (it is a bit tone deaf in this context, though)

Looking at the body language of those two tubs-of-shit cops, it’s clear they are in way over their heads. They’re incredibly passive and have lost any authority they might’ve had. The fact that they immediately open fire after yelling “Gun” shows how unprepared they are to be police officers. They belong in jail.

“The fact that they immediately open fire after yelling “Gun” shows how unprepared they are to be police officers that they followed their training.

Remember that article where they interviewed a couple of cops and one said that the average cop spends about 60 hours learning to shoot vs about 8 hours learning how to deescalate a situation? Yeah, these idiots were doing their jobs exactly as they were taught to.

This is a terrible attempt to justify a bad shooting. So what if your college is in an urban area. Texas A&M is the town in College Station and I guarantee bar fights happen. UNC Chapel Hill is Chapel Hill and bar fights happen on Franklin Street. Norman, OK has a bar fight every night and day (probably now) and that is not an urban setting either.

Every college campus is unique and has its own challenges. Stop using your dog whistle to justify the fact that your officer shot a POC for no damn reason other than fear/stupidity/racism.

University of Minnesota is integrated with Minneapolis, yet they don’t have campus police gunning veterans down in the streets over a bar fight.

Just a bunch of scared little boys given badges so they can pretend they’re big boys.

Seriously, this is bullshit. Northeastern, BU, Emerson, and more are all in “urban” centers around Greater Boston so by this guy’s logic those campuses should be war zones.

This very unfortunate shooting is pretty much what many of us who want more gun control have been saying in response to “well if the teacher/fireman/bystander/shopper had been armed...”.

This WAS a good guy with a gun, and the cops shot him. Racism probably did add to the tense situation, but this was apparently a multi-person brawl with a loose gun making an appearance. Officers probably felt like they had to make a split second decision. Unlike when Philando Castile got shot (cooperating, warning officer, child in car) the officers did not have control of the situation.

Had the security officers not been armed, they’d have had to retreat, at which point they’d have either seen Washington wasn’t a threat, or someone else might have gotten the gun.

FWIW- At least there actually was a gun, not a pack of gum, or a phone, or an empty hand.  We need less armed citizens, and less armed cops.

The facts are that this shooting doesn’t happen if he didn’t carry to begin with. You guys over there have a constitutional right to have a gun and he legally held his but it’s still the reason he is dead. The cops were wrong to shoot him but as you say they will say they had a split second to make the decision. If they don’t see a gun then they don’t make that decision.

I have some thoughts about the guys who followed him and his friend as they walked away, I have a lot of thoughts on how men instigate violence on each other for little reason. But this bar fight in London or Sydney or Paris or Berlin doesn’t end in someone dead by cop.

Let me preface, Mr Washington did not deserve to get shot, he was only trying to break up a fight. If you carry a gun (I do), you cannot put yourself into situations like this, for this exact reason. Not saying it should happen, just saying it will, this being an example. If you have a gun on your person, you are a big target should that gun come out. In a scuffle, this will likely happen, accidentally or not. I’m sure he was doing what he thought was right, but please people, use common sense out there, because there are cops with really itchy trigger fingers. If you carry a gun, you have extra responsibilities that you have to accept. This is a tragic situation for the victim and his family. I wouldn’t count on the cops seeing any time in jail either.

So are you saying there’s no such thing as a good guy with a gun? Or is there some set of controlled circumstances, and a checklist one would use to determine when its ok to be a good Samaritan if you carry a gun?

Sounds like you’re making a case for why carrying a gun when you don’t need to, isn’t worth it. (Need to would be like for work, or if you’re going hunting)

What I’m saying is don’t involve yourself in physical altercations while carrying. You have a weapon that can kill. Unless your life is being threatened, it should never come out. Getting into a fight, or breaking one up, you’re a lot more likely to have your gun exposed, which can cause some serious problems and escalate the situation even more. The best thing to do is to remove yourself from the situation. Firearms should be for personal protection from an immediate threat to your life. It’s your responsibility to keep it secured. As we’ve seen the past few weeks, doing things that can cause the gun to come out can have bad consequences (this and that dumbass FBI agent doing flips at a bar, then shooting an innocent bystander while trying to pick it up). These are simple things that can be prevented. And as far as carrying a gun when you don’t need to, well that’s not really your choice. If you know you’re going to need it, then you don’t need to be doing what you’re about to do. Criminals don’t schedule when they are going to attack you.

Really? That’s why you have armed mall cops that show up guns blazing after the fight was in the second round? Y’all can go fuck right the fuck off with that bullshit. Ten bucks says they were waiting to see who was winning the fight before they decided to pull the trigger.

Twenty says were white “officers” so no charges will be brought.

    This fucking country... sometimes, fuck.

This is so incredibly sad and senseless like so many of these murders. After what happened at Kent State, I’m really perplexed how campus police ever got guns on campus to begin with. It’s so gross and improper in every way.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention, what appears to be, his friend is white and was the one that kept trying to brawl. White friends should feel culpable in putting their Black friends in dangerous positions like this. We get mad at all these Beckies calling the police and it’s the same with these supposed friends and family too. They see what’s going on and how Black bodies are slaughtered at will. His behavior was unacceptable and he should have deescalated immediately.

Washington has his gun holstered throughout the incident, until two men, trading blows, fall on top of him, causing the gun to tumble out of its holster. As CBS News reports, when Washington gets on his feet to pick up the weapon, witnesses say PSU officers open fire on him, killing him.

This is just another pustule of excuse.
