“recalibrated rankings are in no way a form of retribution or in response to Brannon’s address.”

    “recalibrated” LOL

That’s what I do when a report at work gives me results I don’t like.

That’s what right-wing “scientists” do when the science doesn’t gel with their political motivations ($$$).

Seems pretty straightforward. The district made a commitment, contracts must’ve been signed, and attempting to alter a contract after the fact would constitute a breach of contract and an pretty easy lawsuit. DeSoto ISD would be smart to pay the $10,000 rather than pay the $10,000 + legal fees + whatever a jury decides the hassle was worth.

I feel terrible for Brannon who is the victim in this case, and I hope UT Austin honors the scholarship, but I’d be surprised if Bannon has any legal recourse.

What contracts do you believe were signed and between which parties?

Flagship universities don’t let kids just walk up and start taking classes without knowing that they’re going to be funded. A financial aid package/disclosure statement would likely have to have been signed before she went to orientation.

I believe FAFSA applications are due by May 1st, and aid award letters are typically received a few weeks later for fall enrollments. That gives some time for the university and the student to work through any issues before the fall semester. And only once the school receives notification that payment is available, do they start sending invites to campus.

But even assuming UT hadn’t received anything from the ISD, the ISD is still responsible since it’s unlikely Brannon would’ve filled out a FAFSA after she had been told by her ISD that her first year was covered. And since DeSoto ISD has already acknowledged that it was their error that caused the problem, expecting them to honor the commitments it has made (even posting a picture of her with the board on their website saying her first year is paid for) is hardly a stretch.

SPORTS BEFORE EDUCATION!? i am just aghast that schools actually do that all over the united states.

Education costs money, but high school sports can be a nice little earner (not just for the school, but for local businesses too). Is it any surprise which one gets prioritized in America?

      nope.

sports are #1 priority for college too for the same reasons. it’s pointless to argue it because it will never change.

Whatever the reason, it cannot be denied that Destiny and her family are now left in a bind, unsure of how to pay for her education, which now will cost them a little over $10,000 without fees, books and housing.

Um what! No, get a lawyer and take that money they promised you. She WAS named valedictorian. She got the title. She gets the money. Work that language and them loopholes and don’t just walk away. They don’t need to accept this sort of shitty behavior.

Is this the first year they’ve had this program? No one thought to wait until spring grades were in to run the ranking?? I’d love to say I’m surprised, but even the limited run-ins we’ve had with administration at our kids school is a window into how dysfunctional and intransigent they are. There’s never anyone with authority to make a decision, it’s closed-door committees or handed down on high from people further up in the district who are insulated from any contact. This girl’s parents shouldn’t expect any answers, but hopefully UT steps up and gives her a need-based scholarship.

I just have 2 questions: Is this normal? (Does the school usually calculate spring GPA in determining class ranking? If so, it sucks but it is, what it is.) If so, why are they just figuring out they screwed up? “Firing” some guy in the registrar’s office seems extreme. The district should pay the tuition for both and just move on.

TBH IF this is legit, I feel sorry or both kids. The girl that got the surprise of her life from the financial aid office and the guy that didn’t get his rightful valedictorian.

who does a recalibration after the fact? A whole graduation, planned and executed and NOW you want to run the numbers again just to be sure? This is on us, too. Desoto is not called lil ATL for nothing.

and that he and his parents are still negotiating with DeSoto to “compensate for the mixup.”

How the fuck are they going to “compensate” the guy who just got a free year of credit and continue to screw over the girl they fucked out of over $10,000?
