    Did I read correctly? The judge found that there was no reputational harm but still awarded him damages? HOw does that work?

      According to S. Carolina law - the courts have to provide some form of compensation to the plaintiff if they win a defamation case. But still that case wasn’t even worth a dollar. 5 was too generous to me. If malice (e.g. he lost money or life threatened) had been found, she’d be in jail or the fine would have been higher.

      To win a South Carolina defamation case, plaintiffs must prove that their respective defendants:

      1. Made a false statement of fact;
      2. That caused material or reputational harm; and
      3. The defendant acted either negligently, recklessly, or with actual malice when disseminating the material.

    So I’ve got a slew of bullies from middle school who owe me five dollars. Also my good friend who called me a cunt yesterday. But then I owe her five dollars for calling her that first. Also a bunch of commenters on Splinter owe me five dollars. Oh, and I owe my husband five dollars because I called him an asshole yesterday when he showed me a picture of a cockroach. My brother owes me...5 million dollars at this point. I also owe Hamilton Nolan five dollars.
