When I worked for Housing, one of the most horrifying things I came across was 3 children dying in one of the apartments in Van Dyke Houses. The paint was lead based. A mother left late night and had her oldest son (12 I believe) watch a toddler and a 4-year old. Something happened and the apartment caught on fire. The kids were trapped. When it was all said and done, by the time the mother came back, all 3 kids died in the fire.

We were given numerous complaints about the paint being lead based because NYCHA refused to buy NEW PAINT. They kept using the same crap they had in storage for who knows how long. I wish y’all knew how heartbreaking it is to hear a mother pleading for Housing to do something about the paint because they know their child has lead poisoning and Housing continously sweeping it under the rug. Now these children are damaged permanently and all NYCHA will do is throw money at the problem, which does hardly anything long term.

    Shit is so wrong.

Wait, what does the fire have to do with lead paint? Are you talking about what they used after they repaired the unit?

But yes, shit is so wrong, and just walking/riding the bus past the NYCHA complexes every day on my commute is so depressing. Every time there’s a new story about NYCHA corruption I just hang my head. I hope you found a healthy outlet while/after you worked in that sector.

The paint was lead based and HIGHLY FLAMMABLE.

NYCHA was told prior by the city due to a lawsuit to get rid of their old stock and by non-flammable, non-lead based paint. But due to budget constraints, many developments never got the updated paint, so they were forced to use what was still in the warehouse until the stock ran out so they could request more materials.

I didn’t have a healthy outlet. It was the worst job I ever had and one of the most depressing things I’ve ever dealt with in my life. So I ended up quitting when it finally became too much.

I don’t have words. Well, I do, but they will never do justice to my horror.

I’m looking-forward-not-looking-forward to the reckoning, for a reckoning is needed. This blatant disregard for lives (once they’re out of the womb, that is) is chilling. Whether it is gunning down unarmed people or poisoning children, the system knows no bounds.
