Same people who get pissed at NFL athletes taking a knee during the anthem to protest brutality happily put monuments to a cause wholly dedicated to destroying the United States.

It’s almost like it’s not about ‘patriotism,’ and it’s really about something else...wonder what that other thing could be...

The rabbit hole you’re standing over is wide and deep with plenty of twists and turns. Be careful, you might not find your way out again once you make it to that section on Amerikka.

They are traitors who want to destroy this country. They are so full of ignorant hatred that they support a treasonous Russian agent in the White House.

I don’t need to ask Alabama what they’re trying to preserve. They aren’t being slick about it. There is, in fact, a planned community in the Hoover suburb of Birmingham called The Preserve, where the streets are named things like “Heritage Way,” and “Restoration Drive,” and the entire aesthetic is some antebellum white mythology nonsense, populated by nouveau-riche white folks with more money than sense. These people want to go back to the antebellum South, where black people were property, plain and simple.

I’m from SC and 14 years old but I love history of any kind and know a lot about it and I believe this is meant to preserve the history of the states and the heritage of the people in them. Besides, the Civil War was a war about states rights, and it is a common misconception that slavery was the cause when in reality the states seceded because they were scared that their way of life was going to be over and that’s why many of the states are they way they are now because the economy was ruined when slavery became illegal.excuse my French but the article is total BS and made by completely uneducated people just the same as every comment I have seen in this discussion. And if this does not get published because of “hate speech” then the entire blog needs to get pulled down because of all the hate in it against people who care for their country and it’s history. I just hope people take this into consideration and won’t just jump to conclusions about things and make wild assumptions.

Your “fathers” wanted to keep other sentient people as farm animals, decided that this was so important to their belief system and way of life that you literally tried to split away from the country their fathers helped form, and lost.

Your “fathers” then spent the next 100 years glorifying the past, rewriting history and still treating a whole group of humans as being less than you for no other reason than skin color.

Once the government said you had to treat them as “equals” you’ve spent the next 50 years still pushing your rewritten history and moving your blatant racism into semi-hidden racism.

I know it’s hard for you to grasp, esp since you all down south still act like the superior race, but YOU LOST! Get over it! Your fathers weren’t heroes. They were either complicit in a barbaric lifestyle or too stupid to realize that’s what they were fighting for.

I can’t believe I get to say with no trace of sarcasm (because of your handle), “I LOVE “Old White Guy Says!” ( A reference to Chevy Chase’s character on the show Community.) Seriously, very well put. And I genuinely hope you are an old white guy, because we need more old white guys like you.

Um, the southern states seceded because Lincoln got elected and they feared he’d free slaves. States wrote in the declarations of secession and what not that it was about the white man being superior to the black man. These are facts as they were written by the people who actually were splitting from the union.

Everything else is just whitewashing history. Just like all the statues the sons and daughters of the confederacy put up after the war, to memorialize the “struggle”. You can pretend your forefathers were fighting for some arcane political thought such as states rights, but they weren’t. Just like our fathers were snookered into fighting in viet nam. Or our sons in Iraq.

And do you know also how we know it was about white superiority? Because in the 100 years after the war, the whites in the south continued and extended their domination over blacks. At no point did these southern bastions of states rights go “hey we should be treating these people of color like we treat ourselves”.

The only rights these states were wanting was the right to own blacks as slaves, and when they lost that, they insisted they still had the right to treat them as second class citizens of this country.

My paternal family is from Alabama, ancestors are buried there, and we still have a huge farm there. I fucking HATE that I can’t go to any more family reunions if they’re held on the farm. Alabama won’t get one red cent of my money. My conscience won’t allow me to visit a place that still thinks Confederate statues are great.

In my fictional novel Alabama gets what is coming. But only after all our fam are told ahead of time and leaves. So that once the fam are gone, Alabama gets nuked.

*I have no such fictional novel.

The people of Atlanta should erect a large statue of William T. Sherman and then when those neo-Confederates complain ask them why they want to erase our history.

Sherman committed awful war crimes and led to the deaths of thousands of freed slaves that followed his army and starved.

The fate of many of those freed slaves is unfortunate. However, don’t forget that Sherman was deep in enemy country and was forced to live off the land. His first priority was feeding the men under his command. Also, Sherman’s Special Field Orders No. 15 confiscated some 400,000 acres of land from white southerners in order to give those freed slaves land and a means to feed themselves. It’s not his fault that Andrew Johnson later rescinded the order.

Apparently, Ala. has no such quibbles about putting up new monuments honoring its dreadful, violent past. Maybe somebody should ask Alabama what exactly they’re trying to preserve.

    They know.

Wow, there are Lost Cause true believers in the grays.

The South shall never rise again! The slaveowners lost in 1865. The former slaves were freed and granted citizenship over 150 years ago. Their descendants have been free and citizens ever since.

      Get over it!

Oh lawd! The impotent tears of fury being shed by the troglodytes in the grays is enough to season all the bland ass chicken being served by wypipo today.

The amount of idiotic ignorance being spewed by these fake ass scholars is hilarious. To think these dumb asses think we’re supposed to take their word as to why the southern states left over the word of the traitors themselves.

As to the idiocy of those who claim that it would be like telling Germany or Japan that they couldn't mourn their war dead, the number of monuments dedicated to Nazis in Germany is ZERO. Having monuments to Confederate soldiers is like having a monument for Hitler. You don't fucking do it. Period end of story.

If the colonies had lost their fight with Great Britain, then all those who died to support these United States of America would have died a traitor's death. Would those who have died have been worth remembering? Same thing here. The Victor writes the history

And had the British won they damn sure wouldn’t have monuments erected for Washington, Jefferson, and the rest of the signers of the Declaration of Independence which is the fucking point you somehow manage to miss.

That said the declarations of the Confederate states CLEARLY state their desire to continue the institution of slavery so the notion that history is written by the victors in light of their own words is specious bullshit on your part.  What exactly is the point you're trying to make?

In Oxford, AL (of criminalizing bathroom use before the NCAA waved Title IX around and pointed at the city’s brand new baseball complex), there’s a “Veteran’s Park” near the lake and civic center which was completed last year or so. It flies flags from all the service branches and has memorial plaques with the names of local veterans. Then there’s an ugly ass monolith dedicated to a confederate soldier, courtesy of the Daughters of the Confederacy. It turned my stomach, the disrespect. My veteran husband and I left and haven’t been back.

    Once more, with feeling:

I am totally ok with the South re-seceeding provided:

    1. They allow anyone who wants to move to a state within the United States a 60-day grace period to do so;

    2. They pay for six months’ rent and living expenses for each person who wants to leave as described above; and

    3. They build a great big goddamn wall around themselves once secession is finalized.

After that, build whatever monuments and fly whatever flags you want. Just don’t ask the rest of us for a goddamn thing ever again.

an addendum: All U.S. military bases removed, and no more U.S. monies to the South. Further, all other federal positions, from port inspection to Forest Service to NASA, along with maintaining the federal Interstate Highway System, must also end. Let’s see how the American South fares without Uncle Sugar.
