I’m still not clear on WHY he is getting turned down for scholarships. I read the linked article and it does not make it clear either.

Because it’s unclear to everyone. period. The only thing we have is speculation from the guy from Say Yes who said it may be due to his age etc...

Gotcha! Thanks! It’s early on the west coast and I was not sure if I was missing something.

Also stoked to get a reply from one of the actual writers! Kinda feels like I “made it”. LOL

Yeah, if skipping grades and being young negatively affect one’s chances for a scholarship, that scholarship is set up wrong!

It negatively affects a student if it prevents them from doing all the other things other kids are doing in high school to get scholarships.

    1) Astrophysicist? He needs to stop messing around and take them math skills to the business arena. Quants is where the math money is at. Mess around and get into data science and work some of these new algorithms.

“Azimuthal and Vertical Streaming Instability at High Dust-to-gas Ratios and on the Scales of Planetesimal Formation” ain’t paying nobody’s rent, please believe me.

    And

    2) He too good for loans now?

This appears to be a GoFundMe page set up for his tuition fund:

I wonder where he applied. There are many so-called “top schools” that have butloads of money to finance not only his education but his room and board as well. A 4.5 GPA and decent boards would get him into a number of schools like that. I am sure that UNC Chapel Hill would have more money than Charlotte.

the carolina covenant guarantees you graduate debt free if your parents/guardians are 200% of federal poverty line or less, which seems to apply here. have to graduate in 8 semesters and have a work study job, but there is no application required at all. if you meet the requirements and are accepted to the school, you’re in the program.

Debt free from loans required for tuition or does that include room and board and other essentials? Given the story here it would seem that only applies to tution. If not why would this young man have trouble paying for room and board and other living essentials (something that a stipend would take care of) which is what is keeping him from attending school?

BTW- To all the ladder socialists and bootstrappers who think Millennials are lazy: UNC Chapel Hill cost $2200 per year (in 2018 dollars) in 1970.

Old people are really surprised when you tell them college costs so much. They’re all like “why would you spend that much money?”. Even in-state schools cost 20-25,000 a year to attend, and it’s only increasing. They had it so much easier paying for school and now we’re also burdened with their social security (that we won’t get in our old age) as well as our insane college costs.

which is why I call them ladder socialists.  They love socialism for themselves, but pull up the ladder for others.

I just tweeted this young man’s plight to Oprah, Beyonce and CEO/Chairman of Vista Equity Partners to see if they help publicize his plight and are moved to help him monetarily.

Feel free to copy this tweet text:

Pls help publicize the plight of Ishmale Powell, a 15-year-old HS AA graduate with a 4.5 GPA who doesn’t qualify for needed scholarships because of his age? Pls see https://www.wfmynews2.com/article/news/local/15-year-olds-college-dream-hits-a-scholarship-bump/83-564514319

The cost for an in-state student at UNC-Chapel Hill is not $40,000/year. That’s the out-of-state student rate. For in-state students, it is approximately $26,000 on campus and $14,000 off campus with family based on official National Center for Education Statistic figures (https://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?q=chapel+hill&s=all&id=199120#expenses).

It was $2500 in 1970 (in 2018 USD).  Never let a boomer tell you they hate socialism, they just hate socialism for everyone but themselves.
