This seems ill-advised. I mean... they’re doing this now, when space opera stuff is probably more popular than ever (even Marvel is going cosmic, apparently). And with THIS show.

I don’t know what they OR the Fox execs are thinking.

Syfy still needs to make money off of their space shows — notice how they haven’t cancelled Killjoys yet? — and it’s clear that the deal they had for The Expanse simply wasn’t enough.

Fox, though? Yeah, Fox can eat a fart for what they did to Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

They canceled Killjoys last year. They gave it two final seasons to finish though.

I was unaware of just how bad their deal was for this; first run live for a series (and this year, live is 1m, versus ~1.4 in S1) is simply brutal revenue for something that is reported only about 30% less expensive than GoT to produce- a thread suggested it was like $5-7M an episode.

Reminds me a bit of why the original BSG got cancelled, where the ratings were ok but the costs were just not in line. Unlike then, though, there are about 20 times as many distribution channels, and somebody will probably take a flyer even if the later books aren’t nearly as good source material.

It may be too much, however, to expect the production quality to be kept up as well.

It’s also on basic cable, which is a total shitshow. I watched the third season premiere, and there were commercial breaks every five minutes. Ultimately I decided it was worth my while to buy a season pass off iTunes and binge the thing once it was over.

It would be great if one of the streaming services picked it up, but they’ve already got their plates full with ambitious genre projects — Consider Phlebas at Amazon, Foundation at Apple, Lost in Space and Altered Carbon at Netflix. Disney, obviously, has plenty of franchises it could turn into streaming exclusives. I could see Netflix picking it up, but it seems like something they wouldn’t get behind in a big way.

Well, the only good news is that the economics are so warped right now for Amazon and Netflix - revenue growth and share uber alles - that despite all their existing projects, not terribly hard to see them picking up another one.

Of course, if the only rights available here are first aired versus the whole package, this thing is going to die a quick, sad death.

Deadline cites broadcast rights as the probable cause for the cancelation, because Syfy can only show The Expanse on a live, first-run basis in the US and has no option for digital or streaming platforms.

Yep, that was the death knell — we’re lucky that they greenlit three seasons with a deal that bad.

To be clear: almost nobody watches things live anymore and Syfy, especially, needs to get money from their digital and streaming platforms. Syfy probably gets a bunch of money from the fact that The Magicians streams on Netflix (plus the fact that NBC - Syfy’s owner - is the production company for The Magician helps offset the costs).

No streaming/digital deal + first run only (no syndication) + the show isn’t owned or made by NBC = it’s toast.

(Also: this is pretty much why I believe Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be renewed for a sixth season — it’s owned and produced by ABC Studios, it has a deal with Hulu and Netflix, and it’s shown that it can operate with a reduced budget. Poor ratings are bad, but then you see they increase 150% when you include Live+7 streaming.)

I am, still, but was planning to finally cut the cord and go to Hulu as soon as this Expanse season is done. Guess that’s an even easier decision now.

The streaming restrictions are the #1 reason so many people I know were late to the show (including myself). And they don’t even replay it in a way one can catch up if they are watching it on cable.

Fingers crossed for a Netflix pickup! (Only 3 shows I really enjoy at the moment, The Expanse, Westworld and The Handmaid’s Tale.)

Honestly, I’m not sure I mind. Maybe because I loved the (early) books so much, the increasing divergence from them, and particularly the changes to Holden, have really started to annoy me.

While I like Steven Strait, who is doing a good job with the role, he is not the Holden I pictured reading the books. That Holden looked a bit more like this guy (from Loose Canons) and definitely wasn’t Strait’s 6'2":

      Image for article titled

Amos is another miss for me; the impression I get from the books is of a much taller and more intimidating guy. Wes Chatham is plenty buff enough (and quite handsome too — woof!); I just wanted my Amos to be like 6'5" and built that way.

To me Holden on tv is too tall and skinny, he looks more like a belter to me.

The idea that Krypton has better ratings than The Expanse makes me throw up a little bit. This is why we can’t have nice things.

This is also why we should stop trusting SyFy when they say they want to get back into Science Fiction. It’s catastrophically clear that they do not care about science fiction.

“It’s catastrophically clear that they do not care about science fiction.”

Would you pay $50/episode to watch The Expanse? No? Then you must not care about science fiction.

Just because SyFy isn’t a charity doesn’t mean they don’t care about science fiction.  Sounds like the deal they had for The Expanse was hideously unprofitable.

Critics and fans alike love Expanse. It’ll continue to exist elsewhere, whilst SyFy will likely find themselves in the shitter after having done something so stupid.

Just think on it for a sec...if you thought you had a great show, with great talent...would you sell it SyFy after what they just did to Expanse?

The answer is a resounding NO.

They just killed the entire premise of their network, as they’ve tried to do so many times before. Whereas, this time, I’m pretty fucking sure they’ve succeeded.

This marks the death of SyFy Channel. Expanse will live on, I’d wager everything I own on it.

Not a good bet. SyFy canceled BSG and spent several years as a wrestling channel, but it’s still here, and BSG is gone.

Eh, Brooklyn 99 has hit the end of their story anyway, they’ve all become family, and this season has kind of suffered for that after the beginning of this season.

So glad they canceled Dark Matter to concentrate on their in-house ip.

Gained them a year and not a lot of goodwill.

Canceling Dark Matter destroyed a tremendous amount of goodwill.

SyFy really likes shooting themselves in the foot, they have learned nothing from the days when they canceled legit scifi shows for Ghost Hunters, Ice Truckers, and wrestling.
