He even ends up helping trigger the current arc, where universes are erased in a grand tournament of power, just so he can fight more powerful enemies.
To be fair, Zeno was going to destroy all those universes anyway. Goku was the one who had the idea of holding a tournament to give one universe a chance to be spared. So in effect, no matter who wins, Goku’s fight-addiction saved trillions of lives.
To be even MORE fair, though, Goku is in fact a terrible father and husband. Never forget that Dragon Ball Z ends with him literally abandoning his family to spend a decade training some kid he just met (when he has two perfectly good neglected sons he could be bonding with at home) and everyone’s reaction is a sort of mild relief.

  Yeah, I mentioned that the erasure thing isn’t really his fault, just that he put the gears in motion for the tournament. Though the lead-up to it was maddening.
  And yeah, Super really drives it home how bad of a dad Goku is too. The scene where Goku wants Vegeta to train with him and Vegeta says he’s staying home to help Bulma comes to mind.

  Well...sort of. I’m not saying Goku is a perfect family man, because Vegeta clearly is a better one then Goku, but after making the wish that Ubb be born, he had a responsibility to ensure that the kid be properly trained and mentored so he could become one of Earth’s protectors. And Goku’s relentless love of the fight and growing stronger also provides Vegeta with a ongoing goal for him to focus on and work out that aggression he has.

I don’t understand why people think there are so many Goku’s in the game. There’s only two. Just like there’s two Vegeta’s. Goku Black is a completely different character. Goku Black is Zamasu, who took Goku’s body to become stronger. Even aside from that, none of the characters even play the same. They’ve got different normals and largely different special attacks. All the weird Goku hate in this game is a real pet peeve of mine.

  Speaking only for myself, the Goku stuff is just joking about how many usual suspect Saiyans there are in this game. There are so many unique, interesting characters in Z and Super, I’d really like to see ArcSys’ take on someone like Roshi or Jiren. Especially if that means interesting mechanics like, say, pet fighters or an Elphelt-style ranged fighter gets introduced.
  But I wouldn’t say it’s hate. The 16 jokes are fun memes if anything. It’s a Dragon Ball game, so of course it will have big representation from its banner Saiyans like Goku, Gohan, and Vegeta. Just hoping they get a little more “out there” with the DLC, because Dragon Ball has some awesome side characters that rarely get to shine.

Lee “Lythero” Geary is a fighting game player who often gravitates towards the underdogs.
Lol, but not this time! Android 16 is easily either the best or second best character in the game and SS Vegeta is hands down the best assist in the game. Gotta give props for the Frieza pick. I don’t see him all that often.

As someone who hasn’t followed this game at all, but watched a decent amount of Dragon Ball Z as a kid: why are there separate characters for the Super Saiyan versions of Goku and Vegeta? Is it just a different look or do they actually play differently?

Jeez, maybe he should’ve spent a little more time with his son, maybe he should have spent a little time with his wife more.
He spent an entire year with just Gohan in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, and three years with basically just him and Piccolo training for the Androids. If he wasn’t spending time with Gohan, it was because he was dead.
No excuse for Chi-Chi though.

  All the time they spend together after his first death, its just hard training for an incoming world threat. Not the most ideal father-son time. And whenever those threats were gone, Goku would be gone by his own choice.
  Frieza defeated and survived Namek? Don’t wish me back to Earth guys! I want to train with aliens! Cell defeated? Don’t wish me back to life guys! Here’s some bullshit on why I should stay dead and not be around for my incoming son or seeing my elder son through his teenage and young adult years.
  And yeah. Chichi’s the most effected by all this shit since she doesn’t even have the training time. It took Earth getting blown up and her and everyone else dying to finally get Goku to stay home with the family for once.

  Even if we ignore that Goku not wanting to be wished back gave him abilities needed to save the world (Instant Transmission, SS3), what exactly was he going to do with Gohan besides train? Chi-Chi literally wanted Gohan to spend all his time studying, and Goku is technically a moron outside of fighting. The only time he’d be allowed to spend time with Gohan was prepping for a world-ending threat or at the dinner table.
