    Was Shandling too smart for me? I just never found his style very appealing or laugh inducing. It seems like comics universally adored him, but I guess I didn’t really see why. Someone help me see the light.

      I think you have to hate yourself a bit in a specific way for it to work. I think it’s hating yourself in a way which is almost impossible to do comedy without.

    Shandling was his usual sharp and brilliantly funny self on The Green Room with Paul Provenza (2011), and also touched on some interesting and insightful philosophy; he had long been on a spiritual journey of sorts, and the other comedians in that episode who clearly looked up to him (like Provenza, Maron, and indeed Apatow) kept asking Shandling to elaborate:
