Was that a trope of classic gothic literature? Or does it mostly post-date V. C. Andrews?

I get what you’re saying, but isn’t ponderously self-important dialogue and a thundering lack of subtlety part of the charm of the Gothic? Everybody is about to be crushed by the weight of the past at all times.

Just a guess here, but is the thing you’re hinting at, to paraphrase George Michael Bluth: “Makers of Gothic Horror....... I like they way they think”?

Just once I’d like to see a horror movie that violates more of the lesser-known amendments.

It’s so little known that our government violated the Third Amendment rights of Aleutians during WW2 and never acknowledged it:

Of course, this takes place in England where there that wouldn’t be part of the Constitution, as they don’t have a written one.

Let Us Prey was awesomely bonkers. I watched it just because it was one of the few movies I could find featuring Pollyanna McIntosh from The Woman (one of my favorite horror films), and I ended up enjoying it a lot. I love the way the premise unfolded and how it got crazier and crazier. I will have to give this one a chance even if it ends up being disappointing.

But not quite great enough to get me to check out her origination of the role in the reportedly lackluster “Offspring”, despite also having a made-up language for the cannibals to speak.

“The Lodger” was a solid Eleventh Doctor episode, though it needed more Amy.

The problem with Loftus Hall is the ghost story attached to it (a visit by the devil) is identical to the one attributed to the Hellfire Club in Dublin.
