I see the anti-religion people are out in force already here. Didn’t take long.

I’m not sure if it’s anti-religion rather than disagreeing with some of his opinions on certain topics.

At the time, Graham’s spokespeople denied he was anti-Semitic, and pointed to his support of Israel.

There are many anti-Semites who “support” Israel, but due to their own adherence to the Book of Revelations. Anyway, seriously uttering blanket statements about large (and diverse) groups is a pretty good indication about how you feel.

    Illustration for article titled

I’m not sad he’s dead. Billy Graham is more responsible than anyone else for the ongoing evangelicization of America. I’m not outright celebrating like I did when Scalia died (Graham at least had SOME good works to his name), but neither am I upset that he’s gone

He crated a universe of aggressively sanctimonious, hypocritical assholes that helped turn America into the shithole it is today.

Make no mistake: there would be no future President Mike Pence if it wasn’t for Graham’s work.

You know, I’m not a big fan of Billy Graham. I grew up Christian and he represents a side of Christianity I’ve never much cared for. At the same time, the vitriol in this comments section is disgusting. Celebrating the death of anyone is pretty nasty behavior and celebrating the death of someone who is at worst a mixed figure seems really narrow-minded and mean spirited.

I know we’re an internet comments community and hence not really held to any standard or code, and I can’t say I expect better, but I will say I think the toxicity around here is pretty awful and the reason so few bothered to make the switch to KINJA.

Believing in ghosts for a living is really narrow-minded. Spending your entire life trying to convince everyone else you are right about believing in ghosts is mean spirited. (pun intended).

I also grew up Christian, and Graham represents a side of “Christianity” that I abhor. The damage this man and his followers have done to, and in the name of, Christianity, is unfathomable. Sure, as others have noted, he wasn’t as big a scumbag as Jerry Falwell or Jim Bakker or Pat Robertson, but that’s a super low bar to clear. And while his evil wasn’t as extreme as theirs, his reach was much farther and therefore the damage he did was arguably greater. 2 Corinthians 11:13-15 “13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ.

14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.

15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.”

Also, as far as this being a symptom of Kinja-fication, I can pretty much guarantee you his death would have been equally celebrated on the old AV Club. If anything, the article itself would likely have done even more to hold his feet to the fire for his bigoted views than this one did.

denied he was anti-Semitic, and pointed to his support of Israel.

Forty years later, and this phrase still gets a lot of work.

When you die, do you really think your life will have prepared you at all for what’s next? At best, we don’t know. There’s no reason to be an asshat but because some people believe in things you don’t.

I don’t know what I believe but I hate when faith is derided as delusion by internet lackwits.
