A full-time stay-at-home cartoonist would have no issues with Mondays; he works when he wants to work.

This commentator proposes that Monday is the day when Odie, refreshed from his own day off, barks at the mailman with re-enthused vigor.

I’m assuming Jon has deadlines. Maybe his publisher demands a certain amount of work done by Monday?

I’m not sure why that would bother Garfield, though.

You know a good cartoonist would stay weeks ahead of deadline to allow himself to be able to take breaks (Watterson), but I guess that sort of thing would never occur to Jon Davis.

Probably not too spicy a take but lasagna isn’t that good.

It’s fine/solid when it’s just out of the oven, and then it’s just a huge pain in the ass to reheat with diminishing returns. Idk what Garfield is thinking tbh.

This is pretty much the exact opposite of correct on the lasagna front. While it’s okay when fresh from the oven, it improves on reheating when it becomes less soupy.

If you’re reheating in the microwave, zap it for a longer period of time on a low-power level. Helps diminish that “Dry on the edges, still cold in the middle” issue.

Garfield is fully aware that he’s a corporate wage slave. On Sundays he gets to stretch his legs in glorious color and doesn’t need to go to work till 10AM or so. On Monday he’s back to cramped black and white at 6AM. Feh.

Garfield is actually a big binge drinker on the weekend and usually has a massive hangover on Monday.

Again, why would a cat, without employment, not find *every* day a suitable day to binge drink?

Why, as the larger cat, does Garfield not simply eat Nermal?

The kind of people who tack comic strips to the side of their cubicle hate Mondays. This is all the explanation a blatantly mercenary strip like Garfield requires.

I think Jim Davis wanted a built-in running gag so that he could basically take a weekly break from coming up with “jokes.” I don’t even think he came up with the idea on his own—Virgil Partch had a single-panel comic called “Big George” that did the same I hate Mondays thing well before Garfield came out.

At first I liked that one with the wastebasket, but then I noticed that Jon has turned to react to the “DOOMP” of the wadded-up paper hitting the wastebasket AS IT HAPPENS and now I’m just mad at everything.

Apparently Davis already gave an answer to this question back in 2014:

Garfield does not have a job, Garfield does not go to school and every day is the same. Nevertheless every Monday is just a reminder that his life is the same old, same old cycling again and for some reason even though his life is pretty much the same every day on Mondays specifically, awful things tend to happen to him physically.

Which sort of makes it seem like he’s following the European convention of treating Monday as the first day of the week?
