That show, when it was still on Fri. night, was a great way to wrap the week.

    I really miss it.

Its on Netflix now on Sundays. Different day of the week, same show essentially. Now they can make fun of Kim and Co as well. Win win

Generally, making fun of the Kardashians is kind of hacky, so maybe no real loss.

Pretty much everything The Soup made fun of was hacky though, they usually went after very low hanging fruit.

Joel was well ahead of the curve on this one. He made fun of them when all Kim had was a big ass and a sex tape

I have no idea what any of the Kardashians look like. I’ve seen pictures several times, but for some reason they vanish from my head the instant I look away. And I’m perfectly fine with that.

Just picture hair and lips and tits and ass put together in a cartoonish way and in various shapes and sizes.

Like many here I used to loathe the Kardashians, but after re-reading Michel Foucault’s description of the “panopticon” in Discipline and Punish I now mostly feel pity. They willingly agreed to be constantly watched and filmed, to give up a huge chunk of their independence in exchange for money. They can have no privacy, no inner life. Their lives are an endless performance where the makeup can never come off and where nothing is genuine.

They’re all in hell and they’re too stupid to realize it.

They can walk away any time but they love the attention and they love the money. Save your pity for for people who deserve it.

Its not money though, the family had a fuck ton of money.  They wanted fame.  It was enough to be rich as fuck and be slightly famous for such a thing, they wanted to be a household name.    A Sex tape and the rise of reality TV made that possible for them.

What clip is the one that the The Soup offscreen crew/staff laughed the hardest at? My vote is for the woman who started talking about the Obamas fisting each other.

You got a link to that? Anyway, my answer is maybe Spaghetti Cat or any of the Glory Hole segments.

“Gay Shows: Alaska Edition” (ie., the search for the “glory hole”)  has to be the answer.

“Kim Kardashian was only famous for having a big a– and a sex tape.”

Is that not the agreed upon reason?

It is, but she’s also been famous for nearly 15 years. No one but old people remember why now.

According to my very stupid teenage niece,  she is a fashion mogul.    When I asked her “What the fuck is a fashion mogul?” she was unable to answer, but Kim totally is one and that is why she is famous.

I remember he talked about this years ago in his standup, that apparently Kris put it in their second (or third) contract with E! that the network could no longer even mention the sex tape, that as a condition of continuing the show they had to be treated as legitimate celebrities who earned their fame. McHale noted this in his standup, to make sure we noticed how even when they were rarely able to make fun of the Klan (basically just Khloe at this point, Kim and Kris were basically off limits), he wasn’t allowed to use the classic opener about the big ass and the sex tape.

I will hear sometimes people say “Why do people hate the Kardashins so much” and this is a perfect example. Kim Kardashin Sex tape is what made them famous. I am not saying they have to bring it up every episode of their show but acting like they are legitimate celebrities for any other reason is insane. Its extreme rich white privilege.   If Kim wasn’t a hot rich girl who everyone saw fuck then the only thing that family would have been famous for was lending OJ a truck.

I find it strange that anyone thinks there is such a thing as a “legitimate celebrity.” Nicole Kidman is very good at pretending to be other people on camera. LeBron James is very good at getting orange balls into tall hoops while other people are trying to stop him. The Kardashians are very good at getting people invested in their quotidian arguments on TV, and wanting to buy the clothes they make. All of these skills are equally irrelevant to further human growth or flourishing, and all are impressive enough in their own way (youand I probably couldn’t do any of them)- why do we think some of them getting compensated millions of dollars for the entertainment they provide is “legitimate” and some of them, it isn’t? People like what they like, and where the things they like are damaging to someone or the world it can be called out but there’s not some right and moral way to gain celebrity the Kardashians bypassed. Being a celebrity is always strange and weird, and rarely based in real world skills. That’s the whole ‘celebrity’ deal.

I think a little bit of Emmanuel Macron humor would be welcome.

Oh, you meant a different president. I just don’t think Pena Nieto is all that funny.

E! is phenomenally stupid. There is not one person who watched Keeping Up With The Kardashians who would have suddenly realized that they were watching crap by seeing the gang from The Soup make fun of a clip. Not one. If anything, there were getting free publicity and drawing in the people who would have watched for the next train wreck.

So according to that family, a comedian mining for laughs= a threat to their livelihood, whereas releasing a sex tape= cost of doing business.

ya, me and most people watch KUWTK bc it’s crap. it’s not supposed to be enlightening or anything. watching rich people fight about dumb shit is supposed to be a mindless escape from our everyday lives. E! fucked up on that one, allowing joel to cover the kardashians would have probably gotten them more viewers way back when

This isn’t new news. When the sanction came down they essentially acknowledged it on air.

He even mentioned it in 2011: https://www.usmagazine.com/entertainment/news/joel-mchale-not-allowed-to-mock-the-kardashians-on-the-soup-2011198/
