    First, we should probably get in the habit of adding the caveat that the “unemployment numbers” are a really shitty indication of how many people are unemployed or even underemployed. Always has been. It’s another thing that Obama got criticised for, but we know that he couldn’t change the calculation to more accurately reflect actual unemployment, cause look what happened when he stopped hiding the costs of Bush 43's wars. He got blamed for adding all those Billions to the deficit. That the official black unemployment numbers have gone back up is a problem, but Trump’s apparent belief that he lowered unemployment for anybody is a little scary. That he will have people who are being actively harmed by his policies believing it too is even more so.

      Goes with out saying that Trump’s actual first year began on Jan 20th, 2018. So lower unemployment rates during 2017, should be attributed to Obama.

      It’s going forward this year will see how well 🙄 his policies do.

      There’s no need to change the calculation. The BLS already has several unemployment measures. The one that’s typically reported is the U-3, but the U-6 includes under employed and marginally employed.

      U-3, total unemployed, as a percent of the civilian labor force (this is the definition used for the official unemployment rate);

      U-4, total unemployed plus discouraged workers, as a percent of the civilian labor force plus discouraged workers;

      U-5, total unemployed, plus discouraged workers, plus all other marginally attached workers, as a percent of the civilian labor force plus all marginally attached workers; and

      U-6, total unemployed, plus all marginally attached workers, plus total employed part time for economic reasons, as a percent of the civilian labor force plus all marginally attached workers.

      You left off the option of blaming them for not wanting to work and take the great jobs he has made happen. He is obviously too sensitive to let it go so easily after taking umbrage at POC for not clapping for him.

    Deep State Conspiracy?

    I was laughing about the idea of the Deep State last night with my sister. Like how can the government be brilliantly Machiavellian and hopelessly inept at the same time?

      I guess like it can rain while the sun is out? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      If you go down that hole, then Trump is a puppet for the real folks in charge. They use his ineptitude to keep folk’s eyes off the real agendas.

      And the worst of that thinking reminds me that there’s a precedent for that with Reagan already, so I don’t even have to work to make myself paranoid.

    “What will our braggart-in-chief have to say now?” It will be the same as before - he will continue boasting about black unemployment at its lowest rate ever etc.. The truth is besides the point in Trump’s universe - it’s all about the ‘big lie’, and so far it’s working wonderfully for him. Just this morning he was boasting about how the GOP Memo “totally vindicates” him blah blah.. Trump and his white deplorables function in an alternate shithole reality and they are comfortable.

    Not so bold prediction: based on Trump’s comments during the women’s march and rebuttal to Jay-Z, he will find a way to take credit for the record number of women entering politics.

    “The black unemployment rate in the United States, which fell to a record low in December, something President Donald Trump gleefully took credit for, has skyrocketed back to its highest point since 2012.”

    The use of “point” in that sentence reads to me like you are saying the unemployment rate is the highest since 2012, but that graph definitely says otherwise. Do you mean the growth in unemployment is the highest experienced since 2012? Or am I just not seeing something?

      “It took its biggest jump upward.” The graph shows that.

      Right, it was edited. I quoted the original text which says differently. I now agree with the article.

    The graph and the article don’t match. Either way, of course, Trump is the worst, but it looks more like Black unemployment is back up to early 2017 levels, not 2012 levels. The upward slope may be the steepest since 2012, is that what you meant?

      It was stated incorrectly in the initial version posted, and the correction was not acknowledged. Come on, does it seriously wound the author’s ego too much to say “Update: An earlier version of the article incorrectly stated that black unemployment was the highest it has been since 2012. It has in fact not been so high since 2016. We regret the error.”

    Oh no. He won’t be silent. He’ll blame the lack of black applause and black enthusiasm for him at the State of the Union. And then he’ll lazy black people for not working hard to get more jobs.

    If it’s good news, he must be the cause of it!

    If it’s bad news, his enemies are causing it!

    And yes, I firmly believe he thinks of black people as a gestalt as “the enemy”.

    Fake news. Media making it like it’s my fault. It’s not, I created black jobs, they just aren’t taking them. I’m a job creator, I create more jobs than any other President, my numbers are the best, I’m a very smart job creator, very smart. If they stopped acting like thugs, they’d get hired, problem solved. I create jobs because I’m very very smart.

    That’s what Trump would say.
