I’m from Cleveland. I put this in the exact same category as white folks who claim a small percentage of Native American heritage and use that as justification for supporting Chief Wahoo as a mascot.

I love how often I see my fellow Clevelanders here, we need to organize a Cleveland Root chapter or something

Went to visit a friend at her dorm and even at the University there’s one of those gross bitches.

Thanks for this explanation, because I’ve been trying to ‘connect the dots’ for a while now. I didn’t know what a banana peel was supposed to mean so I kept trying to make a connection. I came up with a weird ‘answer’ which was under the ‘well that’s not right’ heading, but I’m glad you explained it. Now I’m going to try and erase the other thing I came up with, trying to come up with some rude thing like that. ugh.

She wants to prove that Black folks are “monkeys” because we eat bananas by holding up an eaten banana?

    Oh the irony.

“She wants to prove that Black folks are “monkeys” because we eat bananas by holding up an eaten banana?...”

“...the picture, which was not posted by either of the women in the photo...”

My reading of the latter says the two women in the photo were goofing off when someone took their photo. Someone unknown, maybe the photo taker, then posted the photo with an added caption.

So we don’t know who wants what.

You gotta be impressed when white college girls are trying their damnedest to out stupid white college men or white men in general. At this point The National office of this sorority needs to step in, soon.

I am a Phi and AM PISSED that International has done nothing other than a media statement (and apparently it was ridiculous as the GW chapter then had to issue a second statement, which said in part, “We recognize that our earlier response, supplied by our National Headquarters, did not reflect the severity of this racist act.”

There is nothing on International’s website, the social media, etc. I’m many years away from college and don’t interact with the organization anymore except when girls from a local chapter come to volunteer with my nonprofit. So I don’t really feel any real connection to these girls that have behaved so stupidly. But I am sure as hell disgusted by International!

Are they hoping that if they don’t say anything, no one will notice? Now I’m wishing I’d kept paying my alumni dues all this time so they’d actually pay attention to my complaints.

I’m really sick of these universities keep claiming “this is not our community” The fact that they KEEP happening in the SAME places with the SAME sort of people should indicate to anyone that this IS their community.

I went to the Alpha Phi International Facebook page and guess what I saw... not a damn official word about any of this, and then a bunch of comments from college-age sisters being defensive and saying, “This was just a few bad apples!” Nope. If it’s a bunch of sisters from different parts of the country and if International can’t even be bothered to say anything about it, then yup, there is a whole lot of rot happening inside.

    Illustration for article titled

I didn’t know that people who are definitely over the age of 18*, were still “kids.” In the black community, we stop being “kids” the very day we turn 18. Sometimes it’s even earlier.

*Anyone planning on rushing orgs like Alpha Phi at a university must be at least 18 years old in order to go through Rush.

I rushed at 17, spring of my freshman year, so I don’t know that that part is true. That said, 17 is still about 10 years past when you should start being punished if you do racist shit. .

It feels like the only question I’ve been asking today is “what did they think was gonna happen”.

I think the answer is that white people think there’s no consequences for their actions, which is why they post racist photos, use the n-word because “it’s cool”, and buy Taylor Swift albums. It’s all gonna work out for them in the end.

Worse part is, they’re typically right.

Having gone to a sorority party at GW, this is not surprising.

There’s a reason even Georgetown wouldn’t accept their (parents’) money...
