Now, if I had to put money down, I’d put down a small bet that the Supreme Court will find some way to fuck this ruling up, ‘cause 2018. But until then, I’m glad another court is on the record highlighting how ridiculous this disenfranchizement is.

And, BTW, I don’t even mind people serving time voting. So, taking away that right for people who have already served their time has always looked unconstitutional on its face to me.

I wouldn’t either, except you know that incarcerated people would just be coerced into voting the way the prison owners wanted them to. Give it back to anyone on parole, though.

It’s hard to implore people to take note in state politics when they (the general public) can’t name their state representative or senator and think that the executive office is run under the current the federal government. The state is very open about fucking people over so they have no need to lie. I’ve been hollering for 15 years for Florida residents to pay attention, but they rarely do. I hope this is another wake-up call.

Yep. You want to be responsible and educated about conditions at the county jail? You want to know their policy about putting people in the hole? You want to cast a vote in relationship to that? Nobody wants to get into that octopus of weird malfunctioning government. You question them about anything, they look at you like you are crazy. Because nobody ever questions them. Its boring as all hell but the damn county election is where you have your say on everything from jail chow to discipline and programs. It all belongs to all of us.

If you have paid your debt to society, you deserve to have your voting rights restored.

    This.

I am somewhat flexible on the details. Should the franchise be automatically restored immediately upon completion of the sentence? Should the person need to file paperwork to restore the franchise? Should there be a waiting period of a modest amount of time (a month? a year?) without recidivism?

But, in the big picture, I completely support the reenfranchisement of people who have paid their debt to society.

    That is one step.

An even bigger step: we need to contract the prison industrial complex! We need to stop incarcerating POC at elevated rates! We need to stop incarcerating vast numbers of our citizens! We need to stop for-profit prisons! We need to make prisons safe for prisoners — it is a BAD THING if a prisoner is assaulted, raped, or murdered in prison! We need to have better rehabilitation! We need to have better drug treatment! We need to have better mental health treatment!

    This barely scratches the surface.

We need to do better as a country.

Before Rick Scott ruined it your rights would automatically be restored after a certain time elapsed once you finished your sentence, parole, and restitution without incident.

Honestly, I think whoever runs on the Democratic ticket in 2020 should use a slogan similar to what you said.

      “We can do better”

      “Do better”

Something like that. Something that’s *very definitely* about 45 but without naming the devil.

Why shouldn’t they vote? Ex inmates have had a powerful education in American civics, that makes them especially qualified.

They should also be allowed to serve on juries.

    Florida: Ruining Elections Since 1845

But seriously, letting the felons who’ve paid their debt to society vote again is a lot better idea that letting all those geriatric fucks vote, when they can’t even see or understand the goddam ballot. Thanks for Dub-Ya Florida!

Old people aren’t automatically stupid, but I suppose you’ll figure that old once you’re 50 and invisible, stunned at how much contempt people suddenly have for you.

I am of two minds on this matter. The issue is not that felons should or should not get their right to vote back, but from *WHOM* the right to vote should be removed in the first place. I’ll give you a hint: it does not involve the vast majority of crimes committed by black people.

No. That would be corruption, the so-called ‘white-collar criminals’ of society. Those are the kinds of crimes that don’t just undermine a functional democracy; they cripple and destroy it. Such criminals have ceded such authority and right to direct governance by actively engaging in sabotaging it for their own benefit. As such, individuals who perpetrate those crimes SHOULD be stripped of their right to vote. They have demonstrated that they cannot and should not be trusted with that power.

Of course, I also realize that even though this works hypothetically, the reality is something else entirely. Who decides what crimes are ‘corruption’ based? What level of diligence will be paid in identifying and corroborating the charges? Working out critical details like those are like trying to swim in a cesspool without getting dirty. There’s just too much shit to separate out.
