There’s some real truth to this, but it starts locally. State delegates, state reps, mayors, ombudsmen, city managers, city council members, etc. Keep those positions filled and a lineup of people to move in and advance those people with the experience to move up to state or national level and keep feeding an informed, citizen-focused (not Corporate Citizen) body of politicians and statesmen.

It’s starting a bit right now with the most women ever registering to run for office in 2018 elections.

I think the real think to realize is that complaining about Trump may feel good (and feeling good has its place), but the real job is to work hard as hell to get to a high civic/ community level, academic level, and/or professional level and get white-hot with your knowledge and run for something and make a difference.

I agree that the focus on elections is better than complaining. Also, when we hear comments that show a speaker is racist, to me it’s more important to take note of who they are than to argue. We’re seeing more people revealing their true colors. Let’s work to make sure folks with those views have very little influence on (or control over) our lives.

In case you missed it, here’s a lighter take on our progress from The Daily Show:

Yessss. I was going to skip it, not because I’m not #TeamAR but because hope in political/ societal change is hard to hold on to sometimes. I figured if I forced myself to watch DT’s (as a drinker who rarely experienced them, I’ve concluded that he is worse and obviously harder to get over) SOTU and left empty (and angry), I owed it to myself to get full on some Rye bread. Her passion makes me smile (she was in it at the end). Hopefully, the media and attention don’t distort or dilute her mission. Also, what happened to shows like Teen Summit? Has the demand dwindled because of disillusionment?

Angela Rey was on point. Maxine Waters and Frederica Wilson should have done the Democrat rebuttal. Nothing pisses White Republicans off more than strong and outspoken Black women.

One point I don’t see a lot of people making is how effective orange satan’s SOTU was in real life (social media is not everything). There are plenty of Black people who don’t support DACA and want stronger immigration. He had two Black families whose daughters were killed by illegals at his speech. Then there was the Black welder and the praise about the low Black unemployment rate. Optics matter. I never thought I’d see the day the Republicans made a real play for Black voters but it seems to be here. We are still in the midst of a populist surge in this country. Democrats will need to come strong to gain primary seats this year. They would be smart to not forget the Black community and stop taking our votes for granted.

Well, I guess if the former GC of the CBC doesn’t want to try and reinvigorate the “Black party” that already exists “within” the Democratic party ...

Here’s our call to action, because, as Rye notes, “It’s not about them, it’s about us.”

But if you want to work within the confines of a party, it’s about everyone there, and unless the concept of “building a coalition” is central to the mission of any “party within the party” I’m skeptical of how much that group is going to be able to move the needle further in the direction they want, be it to the left, or to the black.

Republicans would love this plan. Division within the Dems would only help them.

Correct, as a moderate Republican, I fully endorse this plan.
