This is infuriating on so many levels.

*If he had been greeted when he entered and someone had seen anything past “Black Male” they’d have seen he entered w/ the jacket.

*What the fuck is scanning the jacket gonna do other than bring up the item for sale. Product barcodes do not contain a particular store’s running inventory, nor sales data. Even if they counted all their coats in X size and found some missing, prove HE took it.

*DM is an unprofessional asshole. Thanks for checking the tape before Police shot someone, but why play games and not give your name?

*He needed a couple apologies and a (at least $25) gift card for the offensive inconvenience. I’d be surprised if the DM couldn’t authorize that.

*So far as I know “No Recording Policies” affect employees, not customers. It’s an Old Navy, not Area 51. Laws requiring the consent of all parties to record apply to confidential conversations, not public accusations of theft.

    *Fuck these people.

Sadly they could care less, because just by using the “store policy” excuse, they can undercut the “this is racist” reaction Conley had, and they know it too.

This is why at some point, our reaction to anything racist can’t just be “this is racist”. They’re trying to outsmart us by numbing themselves to our cries of injustice. So now we need to hit them with something different to switch up the game on them.

That store policy excuse is going to get people fired here. Clothing at Old Navy doesn’t have individualized bar codes so scanning it wouldn’t do anything but show the price of the coat now. The employees used the store policy lie to try to cover up their discrimination, but it actually puts the store in much greater danger. IF the store had that policy but only applied it to black customers (and/or other PoC) they’d be open to a massive lawsuit.

The company will have to come down super hard on the employees just to cover their ass.

No cashier gives a shit about the company they work for. That’s how racist they were. Their racism and want to catch a black man was so strong it overcame their incredible apathy about checking people out.

I got a new job with a better salary and along with it a high end rewards card. I have been asked for my Id more in the past 4 months than I have in the last 40 years of my life.

They always use the “store policy” excuse even when it is absolutely clear it’ bullshit.

Is it a two-word-named card with a white-on-blue logo and it usually requires you pay the whole thing every month? I’m not doubting you or that there are plenty of shitty racist cashiers, but I’m a white woman around your age, and I get asked for ID on that card all the time and always have. (It’s not even a special fancy one - just a regular one.)

Grocery store, pharmacies, department stores - I can pull out my other, more standard card and no one asks for ID, but bring that one out and I gotta pull out my license along with it probably 7 out of 10 times I am actually checking out with a person instead of at a kiosk. We bought a new couch last night and even though we’re in the store’s system as having bought several pieces of furniture there (probably with the same card), they examined the shit out of the card itself along with the ID. I don’t mind - since that card comes without an upper limit, by all means, please confirm it’s actually my card and that it’s a valid one.

These people are fools. Not only are they going to lose their jobs (because the Gap is not going to keep you after a headlining racist incident in the likely chance you commit more racism which they will also have to pay for in the future), this guy is going to get a very nice settlement.

So, because of their racism and foolishness, they have lost their jobs and ensured the victim a nice little windfall.

    Good job, racists!

Sadly they will not see this as their own fault but only use it to reinforce their hatred.

Now they have a story of how a black man did them.

I mean, you’re right but I never expect racists to learn from their immoral behavior. That’s always been the case, unfortunately.

A funny thing to remember whenever you experience this problem is that it is a Catch 22. They’re trying to set you up.

By stating you stole something you owe in front of other people, they’re trying to embarrass you, which will cause you to be frustrated, irate, or traumatized. Even though they verified Conely wasn’t lying, they had hoped he’d act up, because if he did (like refusing to leave until he was apologized to), they would have given themselves justification to call the cops. We already know the cops would believe a group of white people working over one Black customer, so indeed, homie could be dead if he wasn’t level headed. That’s the Catch 22, they want you to slip up.

Even him recording them, as much as it may hurt business, it won’t hurt those employees directly until all of their business is put on blast.

Don’t fall for trap everybody. Be one step ahead of them.

Conley described how manager claimed that “anytime someone wears Old Navy clothing they have to always scan that customers clothing to insure that it was previously purchased,” while also expressing his disbelief as he’s never witnessed that, nor has been ever asked to verify his purchase before.

    Bull Fucking Shit.

I’m missing something—If he got the Jackie for Xmas, then how could they scan it? I would think he would have long removed the tags. (I read the article twice)

Seriously would like to know if there is some secret award being handed out to harass black folks. Cause it would explain this irrational slightly psychotic behavior.

Many pieces of clothing have a sewn-in tag with a code that cashiers can type in the register in case the flimsy paper tag is ripped off. It’s supposed to be used to speed up checkout in case an item doesn’t scan so people don’t have to go back and check the price.

When I worked at Target it was something like an eight digit code with the first three digits indicating the department the item came from (Mens, Womens, Home Goods, ect.).

Add Old Navy to “The List” and boycott them until this incident is settled, at the very least. Enough talking. They don’t care about us, then we don’t spend our money on your products. It’s simple and there should be no excuses as to why a instant boycott can’t be done.

Unbelievable. Fire them all. “We don’t allow video taping in our store?” Bullshit. “We’re required to scan all clothing people come in wearing.” TOTAL BULLSHIT. Really? Then why come you never did it to anyone else? Except the black guy you aren’t stereotyping.

“anytime someone wears Old Navy clothing they have to always scan that customer’s clothing to ensure that it was previously purchased,”

Old Navy puts scannable chips with unique IDs in each article of clothing they sell so they can track the buyer forever? I don’t think so.
