“White people don’t think about race much at all.” Except when coming on to The Root to post gaslighting comments in a feeble attempt to exercise dominance over black people and playing dumb when we black folks get wise to your game.

White people who say this shit geron my damn nerves. They’re the ones who invented the concept, created a caste system because of it, subjugated entire peoples because of it, harped in it til kingdom come from the biggest to the tiniest ways possible, and finally when it’s not fashionable to be racist (out loud) anymore they claim that WE are the ones who are obsessed and using it as a crutch. I love the “get a real job” comment. Like what? What’s a real job? Tell me. Because if you’re saying being a writer is not a “real job” then I would question why you’re reading.

Nice article, it was a good read as I slide into my work day. A question, though. Where are you getting that Ross and Klaue are working together?

Though I’ve always been proud of being black and having African ancestry, I didn’t realize how much I longed to see my heritage on-screen until one Sunday night in 2017.

This, pretty much. Though I’d amend that it’s more about seeing positive representation of heritage, to the point that even having it blended and remixed through a fictional country hasn’t diminished the excitement for *many of us even one little bit.

*There was that one guy bitching about none of the movie being filmed in Africa. He can kick rocks.

I know people crap on the Ancestry Dot Com DNA test but I had to find out something about where my people came from.

I had always assumed that they were from the “usual suspects” countries like Nigeria or Kenya. When the results came in and the highest percentage was actually Benin/Togo, I was...well, whoa. Benin/Togo never crossed my mind until then. Ever since, I’ve been all about Dahomey.

I side with journalist Owira. Some scenery should have been filmed in Africa rather than South Korea to add more authenticity. The deflective comparison of space movie not being filmed in space is a disingenuous bullshit. If budgets and technology can allow it movies would be filmed on Ganymede or Pluto. Look how many times this article referenced to Africa in regard to the movie. However the movie makers found that to film in Africa is like filming a space movie on the Moon or Mars. For them South Korea has environment that represent correctly fictious Africa and it was better to film there than in Africa. All excuses are rationalizing sidelining the continent even with a movie supposedly using Africa and her people at the center of the plot. We can use Africans as actors but we are not going to film in their shltholes. As an African for me such movies can hit the rock too.

Doesn’t the Wakanda in the comics have a cure for cancer they refuse to share?

That was probably the dumbest momment in Hudlin’s run. It’s not mentioned outside of his run so it’s best to pretend it’s not canon.

Huldin is also responsible for the marriage of a Black Panther in Storm, a relationship that had no history outside of a few retcons. Said marriage was later annulled after Namor attacked Wakanda after getting a fragment of the Phoenix Force.

It could be that in the comics it had to be a cure for cancer as opposed to Vibranium. The Captain America had his shield retconned to be a mixture of Vibranium and Adamantium even when FDR was president (as you saw in the movie).

Now that you talk about the cure for cancer and a hidden tribe, I’m thinking of that Sean Connery movie.

Definitely seeing that too. I also hope they hint at or show her donning on the Black Panther outfit as a callback to her being the Black Panther in the comics for sometime.

There was a video going around where a guy was REALLY excited about the Black Panther poster, because it was ALL POCs, and he kept saying “this is how white people feel” (IIRC). And it’s sad, but my reaction was “no it’s not.” It’s BLASE to have only white people on the poster; it’s not exciting

Also there are some really butthurt Snyder fanboys who are threatening to bomb sites like Rotten Tomatoes with negative reviews in a delusional retaliation for people not liking Zach Snyder’s fascist propaganda.

Oh man. And I’m not a gray on The Root anymore? This is incredible. Happy Friday! BTW - I know SOME people have seen the film already (this is art, I’m not calling it a movie, that’s not classy enough) but if there are spoilers can we / I get a heads up? I REAAAALLY want to read this article but I do NOT want any spoilers for this movie. That little tease about Gollum and Bilbo trying to get the One Ring out of Wakanda has me drooling to keep reading but I can’t risk dem spoilerz. Help a reader out? Pretty please??!?

Congratulations Brother. Aspirational goals. I gotta start posting more and get seen.

I saw the 1st trailer for this film and I was sold. I didn’t want to see anything else but Marvel broke my spirit and I’ve already seen far too much.

As someone who loves everything about film, I’ve always felt bereft at not seeing enough positive representations of black people or of Africa herself in mainstream media.

Always found it noteworthy how the mostly Jewish creators of Marvel Comics in the ‘60s (especially Stan Lee himself) were keen to push boundaries and establish multiple progressive (as defined by the era, at least) characters such as Black Panther, The Falcon, Bill Foster (a.k.a Black Goliath) and The Prowler... and yet never created an explicitly Jewish superhero or supervillain (Magneto and The Thing’s Jewish background are both retcons).

Wonder why they never wanted to put their own identities in the frame?

I saw an interview somewhere where they mentioned that for them the comics were more a reflection of the times than about themselves.
