    This is awful and I’m sorry for saying this(actually I’m not) I just flinch when folks say this:

      For me, forgiveness doesn’t necessarily mean that she’s going to invite him for Thanksgiving and welcome him as part of her family, or that she thinks of him as a good person. It means she’s maybe not invested in him at all, you know?

      I had a friend who wronged me. She knows she wronged me and admitted it. We discussed it. I’ve forgiven her but we are no longer friends. Forgiveness just means I’m not carrying around the weight of her wrongdoing. I’ve let go of the negative feelings I had about her that were weighing me down - they were justified, but it doesn’t do me any good to keep harping on them.

      ... Having said that, I definitely stewed in those juices for a while before I forgave her, and I definitely would not be in a space to forgive someone who put my hypothetical son in the ICU while he was still in the ICU.

      The teachings of Christ include forgiveness. Maybe if someone showed an example of Christ’s teachings to the racist that bashed another man’s head in, this wouldn’t have happened. Don’t attack the victim’s mother for choosing to live her life the way she believes she needs to live it. She’s not hurting anyone, and in fact is trying to do the opposite.

    That got kind of confusing in the middle there, or I need more caffeine.

    The assault of Horne happened outside of the home; next to the Lyft driver’s vehicle, making it much more plausable that the woman and her father heard nothing.

    It doesn’t sound like she’s downplaying her vile brothers anger issues either-

    “Tuimauga’s sister told officers that the victim had been at their house the previous night with another friend and that she called the Lyft driver that morning for both friends. She claimed she did not see the assault, but that her brother broke her bedroom door down and called her “a whore,” court documents say.”

    They removed part of his cranium, not his brain; which is much better. He still has a brain injury, but so far, he’s got all his brain.

    The brother sounds like a fucking psycho. I will not be surprised if he turns out to have been abusing his sister.

    “After police arrested Tuimauga, he allegedly admitted the assaulted the victim “in a rage” because he believed Horne and his sister had sex. He later claimed that he had deleted a video from his phone after the attack and told detectives he planned to show the video to his sister so she would go outside and help the battered man.”

    My heart is broken for this young man, and his family. What happened is horrific, and the man who did it needs to rot in jail. He may as well be possessed by an actual demon. Stories like these make me question the nature of evil, and make horror movies look tame. The most hateful and vile people really are often the most hurt and jealous people among us. Being jealous and hateful of black men really will do this man no favors when he is locked up, and he will get his. I grew up in Tukwila, not far from Auburn, and all I can say is that...I am glad Brooklyn has been home for a decade.

    As a mixed guy myself, I understand the complicated nature of interracial relationships, as I am the product of one. When my mother told her father she was pregnant—by a black man—he calmly told her to, “solve the problem.” Obviously, she felt secure enough to ignore her father, which is ironic because before the time I could talk, I was already his favorite grandchild. He taught me how to read, fish, do my taxes, calculate the distance to the center of the earth, and all sorts of interesting things—in addition to paying for undergrad and grad school. Quite the evolution for what we would call now a closet racist.

    Growing up, I would have never known my grandfather was quite racist, had my mother not told me her story about him suggesting she get an abortion, because my father was black. He never once said anything about politics, anything social, and was generally a very reserved man. He passed away just before Barack entered the White House, and I am sure that would have upset him decades prior, but something tells me that Grampy would have been cool with Barack and horrified at Trump.

    Circling back to the terrible tale above...as much as I would love for there to be more mixed people out and about, I often worry for my black and brown friends that want them a Becky. As if Get Out were not enough of a cautionary tale, and Kanye West was not in endless KKKardashian-peril, black men often still hold white women on a pedestal, as if to say when they smash, date, or marry one, they have arrived. The fetish goes both ways, as Becky gets her some street cred, and some good dick. The problem though, is that Becky can always go back to being a white woman, with all the privileges that affords. The girl in this story could not even be bothered to say she saw this brutal act occur (you know she did!), which I have a feeling she had a hand in, much less care for this DaShawn Horne if/when he recovers. Familial pressure aside, having her brother bludgeon her dick appointment should also land her in jail, and preclude her from any and all dick in the future. The whole thing just makes me sick.

      It’s a coping mechanism, cultivated by countless years of Christian religious indoctrination. Blacks are encouraged to forgive their attackers so they’ll never consider raising a finger against them in retaliation or defense.
