Here’s a simple solution; if you are not a person of color and decide you want to do something for or to a person who is, find another person of color and ask them if they think what you have planned is a good idea...if you’re apprehensive in seeking out another person of color to ask, then you already have your answer.

  I have often said that I should start a business where white folks run their ideas by me and I tell them if the idea is going to get them dragged. I’d charge per project. “Should we move forward with this ad campaign that features a Black woman removing her dirty Blackness and becoming white?” would cost more than “Should I give my biracial coworker half a watermelon?”

as the owner I should have recognized the inadvertent message, stepped in and stopped this behavior.

I’m going to be the first to admit that political correctness is known to take a back seat in the kitchen in favor of keeping us all laughing so we don’t chuck knives at dumbass customers. But that’s because everyone gets in and is in on the jokes. We know what’s acceptable between us and everyone involved. The simple fact that these assholes couldn’t gauge whether their coworker would find humor in their ‘joke’ shows exactly what kind of shit-sticks they are.
I was about to ask how tone-dead people are, when I remembered Lady Merc’s supervisor at her last job. Idiot was whiter and ginger-er than me, and somehow got it into her head that it was okay for her to use the N-word. Maybe because she once had a black boyfriend, or talked to the one black guy that went to Eden Prairie high school. I dunno.
