We should try and come up with a replacement name.

Does Cleveland have anything that they’re famous/popular/historically known for?

    Trees?

    Bugs?

They should be the Cleveland Also-Browns.

I live in Cleveland and nothing gets these motherfuckers as riled up as talk about getting rid of Chief Wahoo, not even those sad ass Browns (okay, they were fired up when LeBron left, but over time they got over that but Wahoo? Good God, the pisstivity of it all) They’re already big mad today over this shit, just like they get everytime this topic comes up.

BTW: The team was first called the Blues, then Spiders before becoming the Indians.

a full season PLUS they still get to use the logo on merch into the future, right? only removed it from the game worn unis and they are keeping trademark protection on it. it is hard not to see this as a way to start the nostalgia buying frenzy....plus the asshat fans will be wearing this gear for decades to come.

now, if the club places a ban on the idiot fans from wearing the logo at the park i may take this as being serious.....until then, it’s just a marketing ploy for the #SMEGMA crowd.

The Indians will still be able to sell Chief Wahoo merch and they will still hold the rights to the logo. Starting in 2019, it won’t be on the uniforms anymore. So, Wahoo isn’t really going anywhere, the rest of the country won’t have to see it as much.

Someone on Twitter claimed that the team name and mascot were in honor of them having the 1st Native American in the league and so I ask (as I did then): If hypothetically, Cleveland had the 1st Black player in the league, would they have named themselves something like the “Blackies” and today, would we be arguing over their mascot “Sambo Joe”?

Actually, we did have the first Black player in the league, his name was Larry Doby. Followed roughly a year later by Satchel Page.

Doby came after Walker and Robinson. So how is Doby the first?

    Cleveland Rocks.

Or, at least, that’s what The Drew Carey Show told me.

yes, you in the greys asking....Indians is racist.

1st, that term was used because certain explorer thought he was in India. these peoples were already part of their own nation(s) on their own land. they had thousands of years of culture, each distinct from the other and mastered science and technology that progressed to advance their society.

2nd, the MLB decision is, unfortunatly, about the logo and not the name.

So then all they have to do is find out what tribe that first native player was and name themselves after that tribe.

Nope. How many times does it have to be said before people get it through their thick heads: they’re PEOPLE NOT MASCOTS. Animals can be mascots. Inanimate objects can be mascots. Plants can be mascots. Weird made up creatures can be mascots. NOT PEOPLE. And *especially* not people who are already marginalized. If you don’t understand this by now, I’m not sure what to tell you.

I’m one of the rarest things you will ever see: the Cleveland resident who doesn’t give a damn about sports. Not the Browns or the Indians. I have a slight attachment to the Cavs based on a summer working for them. Nothing makes me want to grab the popcorn more than when Cleveland sports fans get all up in their feelings and decide to show out. (See also: The Decision)

Somehow, they managed to Cleveland this up in the most Cleveland way possible.

    Possible name change: Plains?

This city will defend the use of Chief Wahoo harder than it ever defended Tamir Rice’s right to live

Wasn’t the Drew Carey show set in Cleveland? How about the Cleveland Drews or Cleveland Mimis.
